필리핀 영어 연수의 효율성연구 : 20·30대 성인 대상으로 연구 = The Effectiveness of English Study in the Philippines:Targeting Adults in their 20s and 30s

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 2, 30대 성인을 대상으로 한 필리핀 어학연수의 효율성을 연구하기 위한 것으로 필리핀 연수결정이유, 만족도와 목표달성여부를 설문조사하고 연수 후 정의적영역 과 실력 향상 여부를 연구하였다.
이를 위해 필리핀 세부에 있는 M학원의 2,30대 성인 26명을 대상으로 연수 전과 연수 후의 설문지 조사를 실시하여 연수생활에 대한 조사와 정의적 영역의 변화를 분석하였고 영어실력의 변화를 알아보기 위해 연수 전후로 자기효능감(자기평가)과 토익시험을 실시하였다. 실험기간은 2010년 3월 26일부터 5월 7일까지 5주간 진행되었다. 본 연구의 분석 결과는 다음과 같은 점을 발견하였다.
첫째, 필리핀 연수 생활 전반을 설문조사한 결과 필리핀 연수를 계획할 때 응답자들은 말하기 능력 향상에 가장 큰 기대를 하였으며 실제로 말하기 실력이 연수 후에 가장 향상되었다고 대답하였다. 또한 필리핀 연수를 결정한 이유는 일대일 수업과 다른 해외 연수지역에 비해 저렴한 비용 때문이며 연수 준비 과정에서 연수의 대한 두려움이나 걱정은 생각보다 높지 않았다. 그러나 필리핀 연수 후 다른 영미권 연계연수를 고려하는 응답자가 약 65%나 됐으며 그 이유는 서구 영어권 나라의 문화 경험 및 영미권 원어민과의 의사소통 연습이 목적이었다. 연수 프로그램의 경우 응답자들의 대부분은 만족하나 주변의 많은 한국인들과 필리핀의 유흥 문화 등 연수 생활의 방해물도 있었다.
둘째, 응답자들의 정의적 영역의 변화(동기 및 흥미, 자아존중감, 불안감, 모험심) 분석결과 응답자들의 자아존중감이 증가했음을 알 수 있었다. 하지만 동기 및 흥미, 불안감, 모험심은 연수 전후 비교하여 큰 변화가 없었다. 이는 성인 학습자 대상의 연구이기에 나타날 수 있는 결과로 이미 연수 전부터 높은 동기 및 흥미, 낮은 불안감과 높은 모험심을 가지고 있었기에 변화가 크지 않았다.
셋째, 응답자들의 연수 전후 실력 변화 측정을 위한 자기효능감 검사(자기평가)와 토익시험에서 응답자들은 자기효능감이 높아지고 토익점수가 약간 상승한 결과를 보였다. 이는 응답자들은 연수 후 본인의 실력이 좋아졌다고 인식하며 실제로도 그렇다고 말할 수 있다.
상대적으로 저렴한 비용에 단기간 집중적인 수업을 받을 수 있는 필리핀 연수는 효율적이라고 결론지을 수 있다. 하지만, 연수의 성패를 좌우하는 것은 개인의 노력이며 연수 전과 비교해서 바람직한 발전이 이루어 지지 않은 응답자들도 있었다. 이는 연수의 효과에서 개인의 노력과 의지력이 가장 중요하다는 것을 의미한다. 필리핀 연수를 준비하거나 고려할 때 필리핀 연수의 장점 및 단점을 잘 파악하여 연수를 준비하는 것이 필요하다.

The Effectiveness of English Study in the Philippines
-Targeting Adults in their 20s and 30s-

The goal of this study is to examine the effectiveness of English Study in the Philippines, targeting adults in their 20s and 30s. Specifically, we examined studying in the philippines in general, changes in affective domain, improvement of English ability. To achieve the purpose of the study, 26 students at M academy in Cebu, Philippines took part in surveys and TOEIC tests. The results of the study can be summarized as follows:
Firstly, it is shown that most of participants expected to improve their speaking skills, and actually the most improved skill was their speaking ability. Also, the main reason they chose the Philippines for their studies was the one on one tutoring system and the cheaper cost of study compared to the other English speaking countries. However, most participants wanted to continue studying after finishing their studies in the Philippines, because they wanted to experience American and English cultures and practice English with lots of native speakers. Most participants were satisfied with the studying abroad programs. On the other hand, many Koreans and bars around them were obstacles of their studies.
Secondly, with respect of the affective domain, participant's self efficacy and self esteem were developed. On the other hand, their other affective domains like motivation, anxiety and taking a risk were not changed.
Thirdly, in the TOEIC test, the TOEIC scores increased slightly. This result was meaningful because almost all of the participants agreed that their English communication skills improved through studying in the Philippines.
Therefore, we claim that English study in the Philippines is somewhat effective. However some of the participants didn't improve their English ability and also didn't have a change in the affective domain. The success of their studies abroad depends on the students' individual effort. In order to maximize its effectiveness, students should consider what advantages or disadvantages are in studying English in the Philippines.
