The objective of this study is to examine the effects and problems of the projects of refining traditional residential areas and to determine the relevant improvement measures.
The study targeted Jeonju Hanok Village and its surrounding areas which are adjacent to the city and where hanok houses are clustered.
Jeonju Hanok Village was recognized for its academic and historical value, and reserved for protection under the policy. However, after the mid-1990s, a need was indicated to improve residents' residential environments and to activate the traditional residential areas, and subsequently, various refinement plans were formulated and implemented. Over the last ten years after the formulation of the District unit plan in 2000, Jeonju Hanok Village has developed into a major traditional village not only in Jeonju but also across the country, thanks to various support and refinement programs. However, with the activation of the hanok village, tourists have increased, multiplying cultural and commercial facilities, and posing the problem of having to retain the tourist site function and to improve residential environments.
Thus, this study presents a time-series analysis of changes in the population of Jeonju Hanok Village, land prices before and after the refinement project and tourists, and an increase in residential, cultural and commercial facilities. Based on the analysis results, residents and operators of commercial facilities were surveyed in an effort to determine issues regarding the preserving of the hanok village and the direction for sustainability of the village and to examine measures to link the achievements of the hanokvillage to the activation of urban development.
