The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the leadership style of swimming instructors on the satisfaction level and perceived athletic performance of players. The subjects in this study were 300 middle school boys, middle school girls, high school students and business team players who registered with Korea Swimming Federation as of 2010. After a survey was conducted, the answer sheets from 295 respondents were analyzed except for five unreliable ones. An inventory that turned out valid and reliable in earlier studies was modified to serve the purpose of this study. To assess the leadership of their swimming instructors, Ha Hyeong-joo(1996)'s Sport Instructor Competing Values Leadership Inventory was utilized, and Kim Byeong-hyeon(1990)'s Player Satisfaction Scale that verified and generalized Chelladurai(1984)'s Multidimensional Leadership Model was employed to evaluate the satisfaction of the swimming players. As for their athletic performance, six items selected from the Perceived Player Athletic Performance Inventory used in Jo Beong-seop(2003)'s study were modified to serve the purpose of the study.
Concerning data analysis, a PASW Ver. 18.0K was utilized to make a correlation analysis of player satisfaction and athletic performance. To find out the influence of the level of competing values leadership on player satisfaction and athletic performance, the players were divided into three groups according to their collective averages in the level of competing values leadership, and MANOVA was carried out to evaluate each group's satisfaction and athletic performance. The findings of the study were as follows:
First, the leadership style of the swimming instructors made a significant difference to the satisfaction of the players.
Second, the leadership style of the swimming instructors made a significant difference to the perceived athletic performance of the players.
