The purpose of this case study was to investigate the effects of teacher's telling children's stories on the reading activity and the self-esteem of children with learning difficulties. One fourth-grade student was selected as a participant both with the IQ of above 80 and with at least 1 academic-year gap of learning disability on basic learning test. Reading fluency test, reading test, and self-esteem test were used as measuring instruments for pre-test, immediate post-test, and follow-up test in order to investigate the effects of teacher's telling children's stories. A total of 15 terms(each term comprises three interventions in a week) was completed for approximately 5 months and a 5 week-delayed follow-up test was used to analyze the above-mentioned efficacies.
The results are as follows. First, teacher's telling children's stories was effective in promoting reading fluency. The student scored significantly higher on the immediate post-test and the follow-up test than on the pre-test. There was a strong possibility that teacher's repetitive reading demonstration as an effective reading model promoted the reading fluency ability of the participating student. Second, teacher's telling children's stories was effective in promoting reading ability. The student scored significantly higher on the immediate post-test and the follow-up test than the pre-test. There was a strong possibility that active student-teacher interactions enabled the participating student not only to comprehend plot lines as well as word meanings easily but also to reconstruct the meanings in stories, which ultimately promoted the reading ability of the participating student. Third, teacher's telling children's stories was effective in promoting self-esteem. The student scored significantly higher on the immediate post-test and the follow-up test than the pre-test. There was a strong possibility that the promotion of reading fluency and reading ability through telling children's stories led both to the feeling of success and to the formation positive student-teacher relationship of teacher, which ultimately made it effective in promoting the self-esteem of the participating student.
It was concluded that teacher's telling children's stories was effective in promoting the reading activity and self-esteem of children with learning difficulties.
