When a novel is adapted to a film, it is easily regarded that the novel directly becomes the film. However, it needs regarding as the fact that a novel is dramatized into a scenario first and a film is made by the scenario next. Commonly, we call it adaptation to rewrite a novel or play to a scenario for a film. The scenario, which is classified from a creative play or an original play, was common at a play's ebb tide and it is usually dependant on the original literature. When a film simply follows the original, it is often contrary to the readers' expectation. In general, the readers expect the film to show something different from the original, in the other hand, they have a desire to see the film smoothly as much as when they read the novel. Although the contents are adapted, they usually expect new contents by each media. This study is aimed at comparison with ways of storytelling for a novel as letter media and a film as broadcast media from a perspective of literary contents. A range of the study is limited to Lee Chung-jun's novels since 1990s such as 「A Person from Nam-do」,「Festival」,「A Bug Story」.
The first novel is a serises of 「A Person from Nam-do」written by Lee Chung-jun. a film <Seopyonje>(1993) could make a million people be immersed in with a visual experience, which is a background of natural resources in Nam-do, and an auditory experience, which is a direct 'Pansori' through the film. While Lee's novel has a lot of visual description, the film <Seopyonje> directed by Lim Kwon-taek has more auditory music and sound effects which give audiences satisfaction. The film is exposed as broadcast media with the scenario. It directly gives great Pansori as if there is real Pansori performance, and at the same time, it is a symbol of Sori-goon, which is Korean traditional singer. A scene of the film shows that Pansori and Western instruments are played competitively, yet Western instruments which make bigger sound, collect more people.
A text could be a path that connects to another text. A serises of a novel「A Person from Nam-do」affected a film <Seopyonje> and a success of the film stimulated a revival of a new novel「Seopyonje」. In the end, the successful result of the film made the original novel a bestseller. As it is, print media and broadcast media are mutually influenced on each other. Bo-sung, which is a background of the film, has been holding 'Seopyonje Bo-sung Festival' annually in October since 1998. Namely, The festival is also created by the box office hit of the film. In addition, a film <Beyond the Years>, which is Lim's 100th commemorative film and a follow-up of <Seopyonje>, was made in an extension of the novel 「A Person from Nam-do」.
The second novel is Lee's a full-length novel 「Festival」. 「Festival」is a ceremony that lets mother go. It is a festival made by Lee's liabilities and Lim's debt of not being in a funeral for Lee's mother. A film <Festival> draws audiences to Lee's personal events through a non-medium of transparency, which is the funeral for his mother. The novel 「Festival」(1996) and the film <Festival>(1996) received attention because they were being made at the same time. However, as a matter of a fact, the literatures that made <Festival> were 「Snowy Road」,which is a short-story that effectively expresses maternel emotion through hypertext, and a fairy tale 「A Pasueflower is Tagger for Spring」. In addition, a film <Farewell My Darling>(1996) related to a funeral is also in a border of influence that society sheds light on culture of a funeral.
The third novel is Lee's short-story「A Bug Story」. There is a film <Secret Sunshine>(2007) directed by Lee Chang-dong in a novel 「A Bug Story」(1985). A film <Secret Sunshine> has a form of road movie, which has space of a piano school, a boutique, a speech school, Eun-hae pharmacy, Mil-yang station, a church, an auto repair and a hairdresser's, and it directly shows the space to audiences through a non-medium of transparency. In order to maintain the objective point of view, it puts calm scenery of the countryside outside of window with very long shot. The recording of the film in the field made it vivid and lifelike by letting audiences hear even sound of interference on the street. On the other hand, a hand-held camera technique was used to give them feeling as if they witness Shin-ae's emotional anxiety. by showing it visually, it makes people anticipate a rough life of the main character Shin-ae. A short-story 「A Bug Story」, which is published right after a historical revaluation of the Gwangju Uprising, has a story that drew a victim's despair about situation that an assailant asked the victim's forgiveness although the victim had not intended to forgive him. The thing is that it covers the subject matter of kidnap. The reason why this kind of story causes more fear than a thriller is fear driven by the possibility of kidnapping in the reality for parents who have their children. As it is, the film makes the feeling of the reality through the space of 'Mil-yang' and reminds me of our current society with storytelling of kidnapping.
While a novel is a work for one novelist, a film is a work for some people besides a director. In the adapted films for Lee's novels, the visual description in the novels becomes the view point of camera in the films through scenario. This visual experience occurs in a text and cultural tradition interacting with each other. On the contrary to a novel, a film has been making progress as media art with outstanding harmony between an image, sound effects and lines.
