The purpose of this to investigate internet addiction of elementary school children and their self-control, to examine the influence on self-control on internet addiction, and ultimately to make a suggestion about how to cure the internet addiction of elementary school student.
To achieve the purpose of this study, the subordinate research problems are as follows:
1. What is the differences of students' self-control related to the internet-addiction according to their sex?
2. What is the differences of students' self-control related to the internet-addiction according to their grade?
3. What is the differences of students' self-control related to the internet-addiction according to their school area?
4. What is the differences of students' self-control related to the internet-addiction according to their internet activity?
5. What is the relation between the internet addiction and self-self-control of students?
In this research , 415 male and female students, who attend elementary school in Sokcho city, Gangwon province, were asked to answer the questionnaire made by Park Young-Hee(2002), Nam Hyun-Mi(1999), and making the questionnaire survey suitable at the elementary school level. And SPSS/Win.(Ver.12.0) was used for data analysis.
The finding of the study were s follows;
First, the boys are more addicted to the internet than girls, and the former was eventually excelled by the latter in self-control disposition.
Second, the children in the high grade are more addicted to the internet that those in the low grade. And the former was eventually excelled by the latter in self-control disposition.
Third, the children who are high achieved in academic level are more addicted to the internet than those who in low achieved in academic level. And the former was eventually excelled by the latter in self-control disposition.
Fourth, in relation with the internet addiction and self-control, elementary school children are more influenced because it is the period of beginning to develop self-control ability.
In this point of view, correlation between the Internet addiction and self-control ability of the elementary school students, the addict group was less able to settle in society, and the nonaddict group was better in that regard. In other words, their self-control ability varied with their Internet addiction.
Internet addiction is no longer a personal matter but one of grave social problems. As in aspects of physical, mental and social change, special care and guidance program for elementary school students should be provided for them not to be indulged in specific computer games or online programs, and it's required to create the condition for building a sound Internet culture.
In conclusion, the children with spending much time in computer use are more addicted to internet than the children with spending less time in computer use, because they are lack of self-control due to spending a lot of time play non-educational games and programs.
And so, it is necessary that every school should make efforts to reinforce the self-control of elementary school children who are severly attracted on internet through developing ideal programs for children with care. Furthermore, it is important that a new set of policy to help apply educational programs in school practices to decrease the internet addiction, and to increase the self-control ability.
