The purpose of this thesis is to describe the tonal system of the Goryeong dialect of gyeongbuk. Tonal system means toneme, tonal pattern, combination rule of tonal pattern. The distinctive height given to each syllable is called toneme, and the height tune that is put on the unit of a morpheme and a word is called a tonal pattern. In Chinese, the famous tone language, the pitch features of each syllable is the most important tonal factor. But in Korean tone dialects, the important tonological unit is the tonal pattern of each morpheme, word or phrase. This study supplements the weak point of the studies depending on auditory impression by using an experimental phonetic approach. However, I would like to discuss that it can be wrong to consider phonetic figures as the only standards of the intonation analysis
First, in chapter 2, I will identify individual tonemes of the Goryeong dialect. And several issues related to this are discussed. The toneme is the basic element of tonal system. There are three kind of tonemes in the Goryeong dialect; high tone(H), low tone(L), and rising tone(R). It is possible that high and long tone(H:) by variation toneme of rising tone(R) can be made.
In Chapter 3, I look into tonal pattern occurring in each syllable number. As a result, in the Goryeong dialect, there are three tonal patterns; ‘mal(馬, horse)-’pattern, ‘mal(斗, a unit of measure)-’pattern, ‘mal(語, speech)-’pattern. ‘Mal(馬, horse)-’pattern is a tonal pattern that one syllable is only shown as a high tone(H). ‘Mal(斗, a unit of measure)-’pattern is a tonal pattern that the first two syllables are shown as a high tone(H) and the other syllable is shown as a low tone(L). ‘Mal(語, speech)-’pattern is a tonal pattern that the first syllable is shown as a rising tone(R), the second syllable is as a high tone(H), and the others are shown as a low tone(L).
In Chapter 4, I look into conjoint aspects of a tonal pattern and examine the standards that are discovered during the process. General and unusual aspects of combination rule of tonal pattern exist in Goryeong dialect. When two tonal patterns are combined with each other, it is showed as preceding tonal pattern in general. But, the unusual aspect is all showed ‘mal(馬, horse)-’pattern. The study analyzes what combination rule of tonal pattern is applied in the process of the combination.
In conclusion, in the last chapter, the tonal system of Goryeong dialect is summarized.
