This study is an analysis of the work XO Pale White, which concerns with the function and meaning of the ?room? as self-space. For individuals living in the modern society, room is a very familiar concept. It is the smallest and the most primitive unit that initiates personal space. It provides a sense of protection against the world outside. From birth to death, it is the place where we feel obliged to get rest and sleep everyday.
Choosing a specific place and settling in there are significant for both the individual and the community. We separate ourselves from the homogeneity of chaotic space and mimic the creation of cosmos by giving order. This particular form of ?spatialization? can be seen as a process of ?sanctification? because rituals have been traditionally used for the same effect.
According to John Dewey, the expression of artists comes off within the relationship of life experiences. Many of art works regarding self-space tend to be related with the artist?s own identity and trauma. For instance, Bernard Faucon?s Room series reifies the idealized space in his memory of childhood. In the photographic works of Lucas Samaras, it is imagined as a spatial means to withdraw into himself away from the painful experiences of war and immigration.
In my own work XO Pale White the photographs are only taken after putting white fabric over every item and wall in the room, therefore the intentionality of wrapping all the surfaces inside matters. Christo Javacheff gives his viewers new visual experiences by covering some parts of space with fabric in his work Pont-Neof wrapped, which enables him to examine what constitutes familiarity. Likewise, I would like to give a new aesthetic experience throughout assertive intervention to the personal room?supposedly individualized but disregarded in our daily routines.
At the same time, I see it as Process Art. Process Art greatly values the activities in making a piece of work and embraces uncertainties before completing it, incorporated into the aesthetic meaning. XO Pale White is closely linked to my assertive action in preparing and installing the materials for the final outcome. Sewing the fabric to cover the entire surface of the room is not meaningless manual labor, but it actually takes an important part that encourages and requires meditation for introspection. As Philippe Dubois notes, we need to analyze images based on the human actions behind them. When artists integrate life experiences through body and mind into expressive energies of their works, their viewers would feel and understand them in terms of their own lives. This organic communication between artists and viewers will enrich our understanding of art.
