This dissertation is to present the valuation on the view of Han-shan De-qing(憨山德淸) as a Zen monk of Ming Dynasty, who interpreted Dao(道) of Lao-tzu(老子) in terms of Zen Buddhism’s void(虛) theory. He interpreted Dao with the theory of becoming(生成) and body-function(體用), which refers to a state in constant change of res(物).
It tries to be showed that two views are interrelated as the methodological approach. This paper begins with the analysis of the theory of becoming and body-function, and ends by integrating them with the theory of void(虛). Along with that, this research investigates his distinguishing mark that provided a new view on Lao-tzu’s Dao by broadening the meaning.
That is, He first refined the notion of wu-wei(無爲) in terms of no-mind, and by utilizing body-function paradigm he put linkage between the theory of void on the human nature and the cosmological theory of becoming.
Delving into becoming and body-function theory, I state my view that Dao of Lao-tzu is not coming under the category of the res(物的範疇) but under the category of the becoming(生成的範疇). Dao is the becoming. This analysis begins that it is not regarded as the substantial interpretation named Dao as the substance, the first cause or the universe. He applied two kinds of body-function structures. One is the structure of void(虛) and becoming(生成), the other is the structure of Dao(道) and Virtue(德). The void, the body of Dao, is Nothingness(無) of Lao-tzu. It is the same as emptiness(空) of Buddhism. Because his void or emptiness is absolutely not cutoff-nothing, it contains and become all potential being.
Providing that the body of Dao is the void, the function of Dao is the function to come out from this body. Providing that the body is Dao, the function is Virtue to come out from this body. If the body-function theory is applied to the mind theory, the body of Dao in mind is the void mind and the function is the becoming of the mind which originates from this void mind(虛心).
He refers Lao-tzu's Dao to two kinds of body-function structures. One is the structure of void and becoming, and the other is the structure of Dao and Virtue. However, these two constructions are equal in abroad sense.
The void or the body of Dao is implied to Lao-tzu’s nothingness. It is the same as emptiness of Buddhism. This void or emptiness also is not cut off from becoming or Virtue, and the nothingness contains and becomes all potential beings. Supposing that the body is void, the function is one that comes out from this body. Besides, if the body is Dao, its function is Virtue that comes out from this body. Likewise, when applying body-function theory of the mind, the body of Dao in mind is the void mind and the function is the becoming of the mind that originates from this void mind.
And wu-wei and no-mind theory of Lao-tzu has the action that turns to wards the void, in application to the realm of spiritual side. He reduced the wu-wei theory to no-mind theory, and no-mind is the state of the mind that is absolutely free from being attached to any. On the contrary, you-wei(有爲)is the state of the mind that is being in use. The body of no-mind's Dao is the void of the mind while the function of Dao is to use the void realm of the mind.
There are two uses for the realm of the mind in one mind(一心). One is the use of the lean connection(對待關係), the other is the use of the no-lean connection(無待關係). The use of mind as the no-lean connection is to use the void as the body of Dao. In conclusion, getting the void mind is important to obtain the no-mind.
