This study is aimed to identify the current status of after-school art activities, guidance teacher's satisfaction level and its detrimental factors in order to propose efficient operation method. To achieve these study objectives, a questionnaire survey was conducted with the guidance teachers from the elementary schools located in the norther area of Gyeongbuk to collect data for this study. The results are as follows:
First, in many cases, an after-school art activity class consists of 20 students or more and is provided twice per week for 60 minute. As for the registered period of the class, the majority is 2 month period. The selection method of the guidance teacher is public recruitment method and the majority of the teachers are college graduates in Western painting major. There are also many current graduate students or graduate diploma holders, which suggests that the education level of the teachers is upgraded. Second, with respect to satisfaction with environment, the subjects are generally satisfied with suitability of the activity space, sufficiency of tools and adequateness of monthly tuition, whereas they are dissatisfied with sufficiency of teaching materials and helpfulness of voucher system. Third, the detrimental factors to the after-school art activities include lack of awareness of the importance of art education, lack of facilities, lack of participation of students and parents and inappropriate time management, in order.
With respect to the improvement method for these limitations, the subjects responded that supplement of school facilities, adjustment of class time, change and development in awareness of participation, research on operation program and training program for teacher and raise of tuition are needed at more than average level, among which they responded that the training program for teachers are needed most.
To revitalize the art activities in elementary schools based on these study findings, first, parents' participation and awareness of art education is urgent. Second, the insufficient facilities and tools should be complemented to enhance learning effect. Although many things have been improved compared to the early introduction period, it may cause complaint from the teachers who have to led their classrooms for the art education if the activity class is provided in a common classroom rather than an art practice classroom. Moreover, there are somce cases in which the student's satisfaction level is lowered due to the poorer facilities than private teaching institute. To solve this problem, the funding support from the education authority is required and it should be ensured that the art activity class can use any facility within school as well as the art classroom. Third, there should be efficient time management by identifying the preferred time zone by the students. If various time zones are not ensured due to the preference for other major subjects, the choice will be narrowed. Therefore, the frequency of the class should be increased and the time should be adjusted to increase the participation level and to ensure efficient art class. Fourth, systematic training programs for the teachers should be developed to increase the expertise to offer more opportunities for them. To secure excellent art teachers, 2 general education training sessions should be offered to increase teacher's sense of responsibility for students to train them as an expert in child art education rather than an artist. Fifth, there should be support to make the education better by improving the environmental conditions for art- specialized/talented education. High-quality class should be ensured with excellent teachers and teacher training. It is also necessary to highlight the advantages that only the art education for talented students can have by giving feedback through exhibition of the class outcomes.
