As the modern society is more specialized, divided and systemized, modern humanity perspires to regain more humane life. While quality of life is improving accompanied by social/economic development, greater number of people are interested in better medical service. At the same time, medical service tourism is now prospering, and it is now more noticed as a center of new tour paradigm.
The medical tour industry is as large as three-thousand billion dollars worldwide, and is equivalent to 12% of the world population’s GDP. From what is stated from above, it is safe to assume that the medical tour industry has limitless possibility.
According to Martin Spring, medical tourism annually earns forty billion dollars on average, and grows by greater than thirty percent. This research divides the world’s medical market into five area - India, Asia, South America, Europe and Middle East/Africa - and investigates currently active medical tour business content, and its successes and failures. Also, foreign customers(potential customer of medical tourism) visiting aforementioned areas are analyzed for the betterment of ‘Medical Tourism Product Development and Global Medical Service Strategy.’ Information gathered from above activities is believed to properly guide the direction of national policy regarding medical tourism expansion.
This research can provide useful information, when trying to understand customer characteristics and establishing adequate strategies, for both domestic and foreign medical institutions, if Korean medical service market is open. Moreover, the research can be highly creative, and is able to significantly contribute to the society as past researches relevant to the current one.
In practice, it was found that the properties within medical tourism environment positively influence customers’ service evaluation. Aspects related to the evaluation of service are cost, ease of communication, accessibility and link between medical service and tourism, and among them, the ease of communication and link between medical service and tourism particularly influences service evaluation. Ease of communication was found to be two to three times more influential than other factors. Therefore, receiving medical treatment from another country can be more difficult than treatment from home country. Hence, it was determined that patients that are seeking medical treatment overseas prioritize ease of communication over anything else. It can be said that ease of communication is the most fundamental and, at the same time, the most important aspect for more active medical tourism. As seen from the research, any problems related to ease of communication needs to be solved to establish operation system for medical tourism.
Research also discovered that linkage between medical service and tourism is another highly influential factor in service evaluation. A number of patients visit South Korea to receive medical treatment; however majority of visiting patients focus on aesthetics region according to a survey conducted by Korean National Tourism Organization in 2007. Patients visiting Korea from overseas often linger and travel within the state. It can be concluded that development of tourism products such as cultural experiences, etc., it can contribute towards improving domestic tourism and deriving greater satisfaction from foreign tourists, hence greater number of patients would visit Korea in the future.
