The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the famous painting appreciation activities using storytelling, on children's appreciation of art.
For this purpose, the following research question was set.
Research question: How does the famous painting appreciation activities using storytelling effect children's art appreciation ability in terms of feelings evoked by the painting, inspection of the painting in detail, discovering elements of the paintings, respect for the paintings, and behavior while appreciating the paintings?
The subjects of the experiment consisted of ten students from first and second grade of C Elementary School located in Cheonan city, chungnam and ten students from a day-care facility of B Elementary School, both of which have equal social and economic status.
Both groups of children were exposed to famous painting appreciation activities but he methods varied depending on the group, group A, the target group, focused on appreciation through storytelling, group B, the comparison group, focused on appreciation through the traditional methods of raised questions and followed the famous painting appreciation rule(Feldman).
The tools used to evaluate the children's ability of appreciating paintings were edited versions of a number of questions made by Gyoung-Rea Im(2007). The 5 point rating measure system was derived from Mi-Gyeong Jeong's(1999) reconstruction of schirrmacher's(1993) ‘Evaluation of Children's Development of Painting', Eisner's(1972) 'Perspective of Evaluating Painting' and Barnes'(1987) 'Children's Evaluation of Painting.
The collected data was investigated using the SPSS15.0 Program. To figure out how storytelling effect a child's ability to appreciate painting, the difference between the scores of the two group's tests before the experiment (which is pre-experiment covariate variable) and the scores of two groups's tests after the experiment (which is after-experiment dependent variable) was calculated as the analysis of variance(ANCOVA).
The results of this study are as follows:
The experimental groups of children who used storytelling on appreciation activities of famous paintings have significantly higher appreciation abilities for art compared to the comparative group of children who participated in appreciation activities of a famous painting which did not use storytelling and followed the famous painting appreciation activities rule(Feldman).
The low rank territory of appreciation ability of art is as follows:
First, the terms of feelings evoked by the painting in the low rank territory of appreciation ability of art is significantly higher in the experimental group of children using storytelling on appreciation of a famous painting compared to the comparative group of children who participated in appreciation activities of a famous painting which did not use storytelling and follow the famous painting appreciation activities rule(Feldman). Second, the inspection of the painting in details in the low rank territory of appreciation ability of art haㅇ no significant difference for the experimental group of children using storytelling on appreciation of a famous painting compared to the comparative group of children who participated in appreciation activities of a famous painting which did not use storytelling and followed the famous painting appreciation activities rule(Feldman).
Third, discovering elements of the paintings in the low rank territory of appreciation ability of art is significantly higher in the experimental group of children using storytelling on appreciation of a famous painting compared to the comparative group of children who participated in appreciation activities of a famous painting which did not use storytelling and follow the famous painting appreciation activities rule(Feldman).
Fourth, the respect for the paintings in the low rank territory of appreciation ability of art is significantly higher for the experimental group of children using storytelling on appreciation of a famous painting compared to the comparative group of children who participated in appreciation activities of a famous painting which did not use storytelling and followed the famous painting appreciation activities rule(Feldman).
Fifth, the behavior while appreciating the paintings in the low rank territory of appreciation ability of art was significantly higher for the experimental group of children using storytelling on appreciation of a famous painting compared to the comparative group of children who participated in appreciation activities of a famous painting which did not use storytelling and followed the famous painting appreciation activities rule(Feldman).
