Marriage is very important decision in our life, but, in modern society, people are changing awareness on marriage because of the reasons of high-leveled education, enlargement of the entry of women in public affairs, growth of desire on self-realization and so on. This made women change their thought from traditional outlook on marriage, ‘have to marry at any cost’, to the ‘marriage is choice, not a necessity’.
Reviewed precedent studies related to this study focused mostly on the single women's motivation not to marry and its formation, and psychological problems much to our regret, but seldom was the study on essence of middle-aged single women's inner side.
This study was performed through Phenomenological hermeneutical research method by Max van Manen and is aiming at researching ‘how is the essence of life?’, which is centered on outlook on marriage of single women. I tried to find out the answer on the assignment through existential survey and hermeneutical phenomenology's writing. Following are this study's results.
First, the participants felt very bored in their life centered on the job achievement, except for marriage and family until they are middle-aged. They were realizing the necessity to organize their new life pattern.
Secondly, the participants are worrying about how they were accepting the unmarried life, and the life not to form a family. Also, I could see that they still don't get over the traditional values.
Thirdly, I could see that career and work was a means of sustaining economic life, in addition to self-improvement and self-achievement. Furthermore, the participants had vague anxieties about being older as a single.
Fourthly, it showed they wanted to experience the process as a mother and parent. However, they also considered that it is not easy to meet their partner who can live with until they die and they had the burden of childbirth, rearing of children, anxiety about that children's age is too younger than parents' age, and rearing's quality that they can do as older parents and so on.
The preunderstood studies as a researcher have been connected to our society's universal prejudice, before starting the study. However, the participants are living with being conscious of others, but we can interpret that they were making the situation that their stereotype can't accept others.
This study was performed according to hermeneutical phenomenology research method by Max van Manen. I divided a middle-aged single women's life pattern to four existential systems: physical, temporal, relational, and spacial system. The main phenomenon through this analyzed process was “denied desire locked by themselves by others' view” and this was eventually interpreted as a phenomenon of self-alienation. Self-alienation to them appeared that they couldn't express their feeling and experience properly because of the tie to the common consciousness, others' view.
The participants of this study seemed to have the voluntary single life surfacely, but they, in fact, had the involuntary single life internally. However, I can see that they don't notice this. In addition, They confronted the reality that they have the bigger burden about responsibility for their parents than pre-period.
Recently, low birth and aging are recognized as a social issue in our society. The participants of this study are directly connected to marriage and birth issue as they are between in their late thirties and in their early forties. Furthermore, if they remain singles, because they have to prepare for the old age life, they might not be free in aging issue. However, they can't feel social welfare policy for them in their bones realistically, now, they need a suggestion and a realization of policy which can help them directly.
I hope that this study can help the understanding about the fundamental conflicts such as a job career and a newly formed family concretely. frustration and confusion, conflicts are repeated in our life but it can be another strength for us to live. I hope that this study improves the understanding about common prejudice and helps recognize and respect various life patterns, and I hope that they find out, and loves desires that could not get over in traditional point of view until now.
