This study researched for the effect of the university students’ employment stress and self-efficacy on suicidal ideation based on the stress-diathiesis model. For this study, employment stress questionnaires of 213 university students in Kyungki-Do and Chuncheungbuk-Do, the self-efficacy scale and the scale for suicidal ideation data were analyzed. The major results are as below.
First, employment stress indicated as a statistically significant correlation with suicidal intention. Second, self-efficacy indicated a statistically significant negative correlation with suicidal ideation. Third, employment stress was indicated as a risk factor of suicidal ideation. As the sub-factors of employment stress, academic stress has the highest explanation of the suicidal ideation and the second is personality stress. Fourth, self-efficacy was indicated as a protective factor against suicidal ideation. As the sub-factors of self-efficacy, general self-efficacy showed significant explanation to suicidal ideation. Fifth, it was indicated that self-efficacy doesn’t moderate the relation between employment stress and suicidal ideation. However, in the relation between sub-factors of employment stress and suicidal ideation, it was indicated that self-efficacy moderates in academic stress and school stress. Sixth, as the academic years rises, it shows that employment stress and suicidal ideation do not rise.
The results of this study show that employment stress is the risk factor of suicidal ideation and self-efficacy is the protective factor. Therefore, it was verified that the necessity of psychological intervention and self-efficacy enhancement program introduction to prevent suicide from the university students’ employment stress.
