Scholars have paid much attention to the phenomenon that temples of thelater Baekje Kingdom are found in a mass around Iksan. And there have been lots of different views about the reason. In this paper, I tried to approach to this issue from an archaeological viewpoint different from the current leading ways.
The focus of the study is thus laid on the sites of Saja Temple, Yeondongri Temple, Daegwan Temple, Jeseok Temple and Mireuk Temple. When and why were they constructed? I examined the technique used to construct the main Buddhist buildings and pagodas and structures of Buddhist temples, and studied the characteristics of unearthed relics in an effort to restore the lost history of Baekje and to identify the position of Iksan area in the kingdom.
The analysis leads to the new opinion that the structures of main buildings and pagodas of the temples in Iksan had been originated from the site of Neungsanri Temple in Buyeo. But, in Iksan, the basic structure of stylobates came to appear differently depending on the characters of buildings, like solid technology of laying foundation on the ground filled by ramming, technology of constructing buildings on the ground and that of filling ground. Besides, it was also discovered that advanced types of techniques were used to build fabricated stylobates made of granite in such 3 steps as double, single and simplified floors. In detail, corner stone was employed for the stylobate together with steps of curbstone, of supportive stone, those at four sides of the wooden pagoda, at 2 sides of the main Buddhist building, and in 3 places at the front side of the lecture hall, long pillar-type stone for the basis, etc., all in the same structure and form as found in the sites of Daegwan, Jeseok and Yeondongri Temples. As a consequence, together with tiles excavated from the temple sites, they are presumed to bear witness to the fact that all temples were built at the same period. The structure of each Buddhist temple, however, is different from each other. Daegwan Temple site, for instance, shows remains of the building with one hall for worship, while there are remains of the building for one hall with a middle door at Jeseok Temple site and of the building for three halls aligned in parallel at Mireuk Temple site, suggesting that the buildings were all constructed for a different purpose or nature. By the way, an analysis of the tiles excavated from the temple sites in Iksan area proved that the temples were constructed in about 4 stages at the times.
This can be said so on the basis of assumption from chronology of lotuspatterned roofing tiles in the Baekje era. The first stage (preparation period) continued until 600 AD, when Saja Temple and Yeondongri Temple were built and the three main temples, namely Daegwan, Jeseok and Mireuk Temple, were designed under the direct initiative of the royal family, it was presumed. The second stage (introduction period) ranged from 600 to 610 AD when the construction of Daegwan Temple had been finished. The wide use of Buyeo-style tiles and the apex of Buyeo-originated building culture marked the period. The third stage (ongoing period) corresponded to the period ranging from 610 to 610 AD when Jeseok Temple was completed while construction of Mireuk Temple continued and Buyeo-style technology was still used in part for construction of buildings and manufacturing of roofing tiles. Finally, the fourth stage (finishing period) began in 620 and lasted to 650 AD, during which Mireuk Temple was completed and Jeseok Temple was renovated. In this stage, a unique and innovative new culture was created especially at Mireuk Temple as demonstrated by Buddhist temples with three halls aligned in parallel, stone pagodas, structure of basements in main Buddhist buildings and use of ascending roof tiles. However, it is noteworthy to find apparent tint of tradition kept in the rebuilt Jeseok Temple with its arrangement of one pagoda for one main building, stone lantern as well as descending and ascending roof tiles.
Both temples were completed during the reign of the King Euja (650 AD). Let's now explore the purpose of building the temples in Iksan area. Daegwan Temple, built as a core facility together with palatial wall, features an authoritative look of a Buddhist temple with a space for ritual secured in front of the highly mounted stone terrace. Jeseok Temple, on the other hand, was constructed in the traditional Buyeo style of temple while Mireuk Temple site suggested that it had an innovative structure of three halls aligned in parallel. Therefore, it may be possible to assume that Jeseok Temple was built with a view to serve as a place of ritual for the past-generation national ancestors as well as pray for the defense of the nation and the welfare of the people, while Mireuk Temple with three halls aligned in parallel was constructed with an aim of supplication for safety and welfare of the future-generation country and people and Daegwan Temple was purported as a worshipping place for the current royal family and Buddhism. This all implies that construction of the three temples was connected with the Buddhism for national safety during the three generations. The motive of these Buddhist temples in praying for safety of 3 generations can be found in the belief in 3 generations which means everlasting period. In another word, the temples including Daegwan Temple in Iksan area took charge of the functions as shrine as well as royal court of the traditional country with a view to pray for everlasting prosperity and sustenance of the royal authority and legitimacy of Baekje royal family.
