Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate and provide the information about the relationship between health conditions according to individual characters and stress coping methods needed for adjustment to the medical facility and degrees of satisfaction in facility life.
Method: The data was collected for 2 months from Dec. 1st, 2009 to Jan. 31st, 2010. Study design used in this study is descriptive study. The participants are one hundred and eight elderlies who are over sixty-five years old residing in five different facilities in Daegu and Gumi. The data was analyzed by chi-square test, one-way ANOVA, multiple regression via the program SPSS version 14.0, and Cronbach's α was calculated to evaluate the reliability of measurement tools.
Results:
1. The most prevalent character type among the institutionalized elderlies was active integrated coper, taking up to 37.0 percentage. The percentages of dependent passive type, self-negating under-coper, and department failing over-coper were 23.1%, 21.3%, 18.5%, respectively.
2. The higher elderlies' academical level was, the higher proportion of the type active integrated coper took up among the character types. The type of failing over-coper took up the highest proportion among the elderlies who has been institutionalized 3 times or more.
3. The most prevalent health condition among the type of failing over-coper was “on a bad condition” and the most prevalent one among the type of active integrated coper was “on a good condition”.
4. In terms of stress coping method, the type of active integrated coper was most capable of problem-focused coping.
5. Degrees of satisfaction in facility life was highest in the type of active integrated coper, and the sentimental territory among subordinate territories took up the highest degree of satisfaction.
6. The factors that influenced on the satisfaction in facility life were smoking, health status, active integrated coper type, failing over-coper and problem focused coping. The degree of satisfaction was higher as they did not smoked(β=-0.324), as they had good health condition(β=0.315), as they had the character of active integrated coper(β=0.351), as they did not have the character of failing over-coper(β=-0.443), and as they were capable of problem focused coping(β=0.237). The character of failing over-coper played the biggest influence factor.
Conclusion: The conclusion derived from this study is that different satisfactory degrees in facility life were seen according to the types of character. The type of active integrated coper had the highest capability of problem focused coping, and it had the highest degree of satisfaction in facility life and failing coper and self-negating under-coper had lower degrees of satisfaction in facility life.
Therefore health professionals who work in facilities need to take individual character types into account when they establish strategies for adjustment in facility life in order to help institutionalized elderlies to adjust well, especially those other than active integrated coper.
