Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of motivation enhancement program on motivation for change, insight, and alcohol abstinence self-efficacy for persons with alcohol use disorder. Method: The research design was a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design as a quasi-experimental study. The subjects of this study were selected from persons with alcohol use disorder at A hospital in D city and B hospital in D city. They were 36 subjects, which includes 18 subjects for the experimental group and the other 18 subjects for the control group. The period of this study was conducted from January 18th to February 20th in 2010. Data were analyzed by using SPSS/WIN 14.0 program with χ² test, t-test, and ANCOVA. Results: Participants in the motivation enhancement program reported increased motivation for change scores, which was significantly different from those in the control group. Participants in the motivation enhancement program reported increased insight scores, which was significantly different from those in the control group. Participants in the motivation enhancement program reported increased alcohol abstinence self-efficacy scores, which was not significantly different from those in the control group. Conclusion: Motivation enhancement program was effective in increasing in motivation for change and insight for persons with alcohol use disorder, the motivation enhancement program would be contributed to the nursing intervention of persons with alcohol use disorder.
