In the 21 century that is the era of limitless competition of information and knowledge, competitive power of information and knowledge-based society leads to creativity. At this point that the prediction of Toynbee, Arnold Joseph that the rise and fall of a country result from creativity, is realizing, education for developing creativity is necessary for survival of individuals and the nation and each nation is aiming to train creative human resources through development education of creativity, today.
Based on this creativity, the importance of design industry is being stressed and vocational high school producing talents of design industry needs to develop different educational method. However, design education in vocational high schools focuses on graphic program education, which is uniform and technical rather than conception education to improve students' creativities, currently. Also, it depends on individual inspiration to derive ideas, not a systematical conception method. As a result, they are limited in making and visualizing their ideas, so more diverse and creative education is required in order to solve this problem.
This study is, therefore to create an idea conception program depending on thinking type of whole brain model to strengthen abilities to think, display, extract and actualize ideas. Extracting specific key words on thinking type, combining and re-analyzing them will broaden the possibility to think creative ideas.
This research was carried out as following to examine educational expected effects of a creative idea conception education using whole brain model.
Firstly, problems of a conception education in design conception education process and actual education of vocational high school were analyzed based on the results of questionnaire and some matters to be careful when teaching students were examined.
Secondly, concept and characteristics of whole brain model were investigated by referring to domestic and overseas books and previous studies and the possibility to visualize ideas was found by applying design models to it. Also, SCAMPER and PMI, which are idea conception techniques, were considered in more detail for class using a whole brain model.
Thirdly, detailed learning plans and process of design class applying a whole brain model were suggested and educational effects of a creative idea conception method using a whole brain model were examined by using thorough learning guidelines and judging outcomes of class.
Steps of a creative idea conception educational program, which applied Scamper and PMI to thinking type of whole brain model, are as following;
First, at the starting step of work, students were asked to extract key words through thinking type of whole brain model. It was to make them understand class and think their ideas more easily by extracting design motives and key words suitable for the subject or concept of class.
Second, at the development step of idea, divergent thinking was induced through thinking technique of Scamper so that they could derive proper ideas.
Third, at the step to actualize ideas, they were asked to actualize their ideas by re-analyzing visual objects that they got from thinking process using a PMI.
Fourth, at the presentation and judgement step, they were asked to verify creativity of their ideas and appreciate and judge others' ideas by themselves.
As a result of experiment, there was a positive result in the change of creative characteristics such as diffusion of thinking process and improvement of convergent abilities by participating a creative idea conception education applying Scamper and PMI were applied to thinking type of whole brain model.
