    ABSTRACT

    A Study on the Realities and Improvement Direction of Mathematical Education in High Schools Special Classes

    This study surveys the current status on mathematical education in the high school special class and grasps its problems, targeting teachers in charge of 98 special classes, which were installed to be operated in high school where is located in Gyeonggi-do. The aim is to suggest data necessary for improving mathematical education.
    The purposes of this study were as follows.
    First, the aim was to examine the actual condition for planning the mathematical curriculum in the high school special class.
    Second, the aim was to examine the actual condition for operating the mathematical education in the high school special class.
    Third, the aim was to examine improvement direction of the mathematical education in the high school special class.
    The results of this study were as follows.
    The following were the conclusions on the current status of operating the mathematical education in the high school special class.
    First, given the mathematical lesson in the high school special class, the textbook for special school and the textbook for general school were not almost being utilized. Accordingly, it is seen to be necessary for the development in diverse teaching-learning materials for mathematical lesson in the high school special class.
    Second, given the mathematical lesson in the high school special class, the opinion as saying of utilizing often the teaching materials and equipments was large. The opinion as saying of utilizing materials for education-purposed software or web-based multimedia was relatively less.
    Third, as for a teaching-learning method that is used mainly given the mathematical lesson, the parallel execution of the individual lesson and group lesson was the largest. Even the individual-based direct teaching was being performed much.
    The following were the conclusions on the improvement direction of the mathematical education in the high school special class.
    First, it was the largest in the opinion as saying of being difficult to decide on the consistent standard because of being diverse in students' level given organizing and operating mathematical curriculum in the high school special class. Even the opinion as saying that data was difficult enough to be seen in organizing curriculum was large.
    Second, the most difficult sphere for instruction among sub-spheres in mathematics was the sphere in table, graph, measurement and figure.
    Third, most of teachers in charge of mathematical education in the high school special class were indicated to have no training experience related to mathematical education guidance.
    Fourth, as for what will need to be improved the mathematical education in the high school special class, it was the largest in the opinion as saying that development in mathematical-curriculum guidance method is necessary according to characteristics of disabilities.
    Based on the conclusions that were obtained in this study, the following were proposed.
    First, training for mathematical education needs to be expanded.
    Second, curriculum available for being utilized in special class needs to be developed.
    Third, teaching-learning materials available for being applied to special class need to be developed.
    Finally, this study was just the basic survey of using questionnaire centering on Gyeonggi-do region among the whole high school special classes. Thus, the results of this study cannot be generalized in all the high school special classes. Also, as a result of carrying out questionnaire survey, most of high school special classes were operating mathematical education with curricular expert system. However, a case that the indication subject in a teacher, who is in charge of mathematical curriculum is mathematics accounted just for 1%. Nevertheless, due to the lack of the training or teaching materials relevant to mathematical education, the special class teachers were suffering many difficulties. Accordingly, it was considered to be more necessary for a research related to developing curriculum and developing teaching materials so that the mathematical education can be performed efficiently in the high school special class.
