This study aims at investigating two classic novels Gulliver's Travels and Robinson Crusoe, which are called "cannon", into children's versions and examining concepts of children in them. Despite the fact that two masterpieces were written for adults at the first publishing, more children have read them since the press. In this paper, I shall start by an attempt to define what children/childhood is. 'Children' are not universal beings and 'Childhood' has not emerged until modern ages. In other words, the term 'childhood' is the product of modern ages. The present research was born out of this dimension. In the problem of how to establish children, plenty of opinions may be supported. One of them, it is opinion that children are demarcated by stage of age. As the classic novels like Gulliver's Travels and Robinson Crusoe are converted into children's literature text, the translator and the publisher can classify the texts by ages. In deading with this, I propose that each text contains their concepts of children.
Before analysis, this study is beginning with the question about the definition of childhood and overview of children's literary tendencies of the times that affected the drift of public opinion. Through the historical flow the author first looks into the fact that concepts of children have been changed and converted by social view. In the following, I shall analyze translation of the children's texts and ascertain that those texts were translated by translators and publishers' concepts of children. Rather than confirming whether translation of source-text is right or not, I shall focus upon examining for translators and publishers how to determine to classify children's texts by ages and here my attention will be put.
My ultimate point will be that the definition of children can be represented relatively by translators and publishers as the classic novels are translated or converted into children's texts. Finally I conclude that the childhood is one of the social structures.
