In this study, in keeping with today's increasing importance of the environment, leading companies in the tourism industry were selected to perform ‘A Study of Differences in Perceiving Eco-friendly Attributes of Hotels by Hotel Customers and Staff’ and compare and analyze the environmental attributes of eco-friendly management of hotels as perceived by customers and the same attributes perceived by hotel staff. To proceed with the study, a total of 10 five-star hotels, five from Seoul and the other five from the Jeju area, passed around 95 to 115 copies of the questionnaires for customers and staff respectively. The survey was conducted for 40 days, from March 14 through April 23, 2010.
To identify the generic characteristics of the respondents, frequency analysis was adopted, and to confirm the reliability and validity of data, exploratory factor analysis was conducted. Below are the results of the verification of the survey data for the purposes of this study and their implications.
To begin with, there was a significant difference in the perception of the environmental attributes of the hotels between hotel customers and staff groups. Among the hotel customers, the perception level of the environment was found to be the highest among Americans, followed by Koreans, Japanese, and Chinese. The Americans, in particular, regardless of gender, even showed the higher perception level of the environment than that of the hotel staff, demonstrating that they were sensitive to the environment. In light of these results, it is recommended that hotel companies should more aggressively inform their customers of the eco-friendliness of their employee training sessions.
Second, there was a significant difference in the perception of environmental attributes of hotels between the groups, according to the demographical characteristics. Female customers exhibited higher levels of recognition of the environment than male customers. These results imply that hotel companies may be able to get better results from their eco-friendly services and marketing towards female customers. The middle-aged, the more highly educated, and the higher income earners showed higher levels of environmental recognition. Therefore, using the customer information sections as part of their customer relations management, hotel companies should have their staff keep records on the environment-related preferences of customers and encourage customers to participate in their environmental policies.
Third, according to hotel customers by nationality, the groups showed a significance difference in the perception of the environmental attributes of hotels. The mean of the eco-friendly perception levels by nationality turned out to be 3.93 for Americans, 3.85 for Koreans, 3.69 for Japanese, and 3.28 for Chinese. The overall recognition of the environment tended to be high, yet among the surveyed nations, Chinese exhibited the lowest. Hotel companies should thus introduce and enforce green card systems to encourage the participation of Chinese customers.
Fourth, the perception of the environmental attributes of hotels showed a significant difference among the groups of hotel customers varying in the areas of policy, of commodities, of programs, and of education/accounting. In the area of eco-friendly commodities, in particular, hotel customers' eco-friendly perception appeared above average in terms of ‘recycling of soap, shampoo, and conditioner,' 'use of recycled toilet paper,’ and ‘recycling of office supplies.’ Hotel companies should come up with a list of recyclable items, instruct their employees on this, and ask customers for cooperation on their eco-friendly policies to achieve their goals.
One of the important results of this study showed a congruence between hotel customers and staff that the eco-friendly attributes of hotels were either ‘average’ or ‘important.’ Hotel companies should therefore ensure that their CEOs' mindset of environmental management always comes first as their eco-friendly management policy, based upon which they should build environmental management systems, conduct environmental training for employees on a regular basis, continue with environmental activities, set the direction of environment improvement plans, continuously invest in environmental management, and conduct total environmental management.
