The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between cultural identity development and sense of comfort of married immigrant women in Korea. The identity development of married immigrant women has been identified in lights of cultural identity development because of their minority status in the Korean society. The modified Cultural Identity Attitude Scale (CIAS) was used to measure the level of cultural identity attitude development of married immigrant women. This study examined whether: 1) they were able to measure the identity development level of married immigrant women by the modified CIAS, 2) there were differences in Sense of Comfort scores across the cultural identity development stages.
Subjects, consisting of 207 married immigrant women, completed the Cultural Identity Attitude Scale, the Questions on Sense of Comfort, and a Demographic Questionnaire to be analyzed for the answer of two major problems.
Pre-decided confirmative factor analyses were used to confirm that married immigrant women develop their identity across the four stages (preencounter, encounter, immersion, internalization) of cultural identity development. The goodness-of-fit index (GFI) of the model across the four stages indicates that although the indices of preencounter (.833) and internalization (.886) were slightly below standard level (.90), the indices of encounter (.993) and immersion (.928) were good enough to fit. The adjusted goodness-of-fit index (AGFI) of the model across the four stages also indicate that even though the indices of preencounter (.772), immersion (.870), internalization (.836) were below standard level (.90), the index of encounter (.993) was good enough to fit. The results of the analyses suggest that the cultural identity attitude development scale is usable for the subjects, married immigrant women in Korea, on condition of revising the scale in consideration of the Korean cultural life spaces.
Results of the General Linear Models Procedure (one-way ANOVA) indicated a significant difference across the four stages of the cultural identity attitude development on the mean scores of the sense of comfort of married immigrant women (F=15.51, p< .001). Duncan test was used to determine the relationship on the scores between cultural identity development and sense of comfort of married immigrant women. Results of the Duncan test(at .05 alpha level), as post-hoc group mean comparisons, indicated no significant differences at .05 alpha level across the scores of the three stages (preencounter, immersion, intermalization) of cultural identity attitude development on the mean scores of the sense of comfort of married immigrant women, but all of the scores were higher than the mean scores of the sense of comfort in encounter stages (preencounter = immersion = internalization > encounter).
Significant differences were found at .05 alpha level among the scores on subcategories of sense of comfort across the stages of cultural identity development. First, Duncan test, as post-hoc group mean comparisons, showed that the score was the highest in the preencounter, and lowest in the encounter stages on the 'tension and anxious,' subcategories of sense of comfort. Second, Duncan test on the 'tension and anxious,' subcategories of sense of comfort across four stages of the cultural identity attitude development also indicated that there was no differences among the scores at three stages, but those were higher than the score in the encounster stage. Third, Duncan test on the 'satisfier and peace,' subcategories of sense of comfort across the four stages of the cultural identity attitude development also indicated that the score at internalization was higher than the scores at the other three stages but there were no differences among the scores in the three stages. Forth, Duncan test on the 'self-confidence and optimism,' subcategories of sense of comfort across the four stages of the cultural identity attitude development also indicated that the score at the internalization was the highest compared to the other three stages. There was no difference between the scores on preencounter and encounter stages.
This study is meaningful in lights of finding a useful way of practically measuring and supporting cultural identity development, and discovering a relationship between the cultural identity development and senses of comfort to help married immigrant women adjust and settle down into the Korean society.
This study contributes to allow us to understand and improve the extent of sense of comfort in terms of cultural identity attitude development of married immigrant women. This study suggests that it is important for married immigrant women to integrate new societal values on the basis of their own traditional values.
