This study was designed to identify relevance with the parental conflict that elementary and middle school students perceive and their school adjustment, and to find out if there is a difference according to sex in the process, which the parental conflict that the students perceive affects their school adjustment, and also to reveal what are the subordinate factors of couple's conflict that have more influence on their children's school adjustment? The goal of this study is not only to reveal the importance of parents' role and help them raise their children but also to provide school teachers with basic data which help them understand and guide students so that students may adjust to school well.
The research questions were set up as follows;
First, would there be difference based on sex about parental conflict both elementary and middle school students perceive?
Second, Is there any difference of adjustment to school which is affected by parental conflict between elementary and middle school students?
Third, what are the subordinate factors of parental conflict that are perceived by children and have more influence on both elementary and middle school students' school adjustment?
The subjects of this study were 621 students, who were sampled of the 5th graders in 2 elementary schools(175 males and 163 females) and the 3rd graders in 2 middle schools(141 males and 142 females) in Pusan.
The data were analyzed by t-test, one-way ANOVA, MANOVA(multivariate analysis of variance), and Multiple Regression Analysis.
The results of the study were as follows;
First, after the survey to find out if there would be difference based on sex about parental conflict that children perceive, we could find out that male elementary school students recognize parental conflict more than female students, but we also found out that there was no significant difference between middle school male students and female students.
Second, after inspecting the influence on school adjustment by the parental conflict that both elementary and middle school students perceive, we could find out that in both of them the parental conflict have significant relations to school adjustment, and especially life adjustment shows the most connections of several kinds of school adjustment. And next to the elementary school students, the parental conflict have significant relations to friendship-adjustment, class-adjustment, environment-adjustment, and teacher-adjustment in order. However to the middle school students, it has something to do with only friendship-adjustment significantly except life-adjustment. Thus there was difference between both of them.
Third, after examining what subordinate factors of parental conflict that children perceived have more influence on both elementary and middle school students' school adjustment, we could find out that the subordinate factors have significant influence on the entire school adjustment of both of them. Statically, middle school students have the only one significant factor, resolution factor, while elementary school students have 3 factor, in which the efficiency of dealing factor is the most significant, and next to resolution factor, self-criticism in order.
Based on the results of the study made so far, the following can be concluded.
This study shows that first, parents should realize how much parental conflict affected their children's school adjustment, and second, parents' education programs that can relieve the couple's conflict should be prepared to improve their children's school adjustment. And this study will provide basic data which help school teachers to understand and guide students in school.
