This study aims to look into how a group art therapy centered on body image affects autistic children’s social skills, basic function for sociality, and changes in expression and behaviors about figures.
The subjects of the study were 10 autistic children in the elementary school, and they were divided into a five-person test group and a five-person control group, and a total of 24 tests were performed once a week for 60 minutes from Feb. 2009 to Nov. 2009. The measurement tools were the social skill scale(Lee Gum-suk, 2001), social basic function scale(Wasserman & Plutchil, 1973), Draw-A-Person Test(DAP), and behavioral observation. The data were analyzed by means of t-test and two-way ANOVA through SPSS WIN 17.0 program. In addition, for Draw-A-Person, qualitative and quantitative analyses were performed while the qualitative analysis was used for behavioral changes.
The findings of the study are as follows.
First, a group art therapy centered on body image affected improvement in autistic children’s social skills, and it also gave an effect on overall social skills, greeting which was each sub-area, using things after sharing them, using with permission and returning, concentrating on the speaker, right speaking with the proper volume of sound, helping others, expressing one’s own emotion to others, and compromising. In addition, the effects were continuously effective on overall social skills, greeting, using things after sharing them, using with permission and returning, concentrating on the speaker, helping others, and expressing one’s own emotion to others.
Second, a group art therapy centered on body image affected improvement in basic function of sociality, and the effects continuously remained.
Third, as to a group art therapy centered on body image, the expression of body parts(hair, neck, ears, arms, legs, etc) in the pre-test as the result of Draw-A-Person, drawing test in autistic children’s figure expression and behavioral changes was omitted, and the position of arms and legs were not stable while the omitted expression of body parts(hair, neck, ears, arms, legs, etc) was expressed in the post-text and the position of arms and legs were stably expressed, and in Draw-A-Person test, original scores were improved to increase the expression about figures. In addition, regarding behavioral observation, autistic children didn’t greet or greeted under the researcher’s direction in the pre-test, and they couldn’t listen to the therapist’ direction and shared media while the post test was effective because behavioral changes were observed as they played alone while they greeted by themselves and listened to the therapist’ direction, hung out with friends freely, and shared media.
Based on those results, a group art therapy centered on body image affected positively improvement in autistic children’s sociality. This study is meaningful to develop a group art therapy program based on body image and approve the efficiency by applying the program to autistic children. However, it is hard to generalize the results of the study due to small number of sampling of the subjects. Therefore, more studied to generalize the results and programs based on children with intellectual disability, developmental disabilities, and physical disorder should be developed.
