The purpose of this study lies in conforming the self esteem of the offsprings from multi-cultural families who are in their adolescent
period and in the center of a major change in their elf esteem. And the ultimate purpose of the conformation lies in helping those junior. senior high schools, to which the children for multi-cultural families will enter, to use it for guiding their living and studying. For this, we compared the self esteem of the adolescents from multi-cultural families with that of the adolescents from Korean families, and then compared the self esteem again by group classified by the background of the adolescents from multi-cultural families. Total 307 junior. senior high school students 146 of which are from multi-cultural families in Gyeonggi, Incheon, Daejeon and 161 of which are from Korean families in Gyeonggi province were selected for questionnaire and spss 12.0.1 was applied for statistic analysis. The major summarized results are as below.
1. There wasn't a big difference in self esteem of the adolescents from multi cultural families and adolescents from Korean families in general. Partially friends involved self esteem was even higher, and personality involved self esteem was a little lower. The relationship with peer group has negative influence on personality involved self esteem . It seems the teenagers from multi cultural families make much of peer relationship more than the teenagers from Korean families and yet they feel fatigue in keeping such relationship.
2. The self esteems of adolescents from multi cultural families and korean families were affected by different variables. Adolescents from multi cultural families were influenced by distinctive experiences such as being treated discriminatingly or communication problems, especially, the relationship with their teachers had a great influence on them. Accordingly, the self esteem of the adolescents from the multi cultural families should be treated differently from that of the adolescents from Korean families, and the role of their teachers are very important for the education of the adolescents from the multi families.
3. The self esteem of the adolescents from multi cultural families showed various levels depending upon whether their parents are foreigners or not, and the nationality of their parents. Their self esteem was lower when their parents were both foreigners compared with their self esteem when one of their parents was foreigner in general. Besides, the self esteem of the teenagers from multi cultural families under Chinese parents was lower that under Japanese parents. The self esteem of the adolescents from multi cultural families under Japanese parents was even higher than that of the adolescents from Korean families. That is, the adolescents groups from multi cultural families are very different from each other due to the nationality of their parents or whether their parents are foreigners or not which indicates the necessity of multidimensional approach to them.
