The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of the satisfaction at the appearance and the self-esteem of the youths on their adaptation to school life. Additionally it was to identify if the self-esteem played a role in the influence of the satisfaction at the appearance on their school adaptation. For this, 445 elementary, secondary school girls and boys and university students were selected and their satisfaction at the appearance, self-esteem and school adaptation were investigated.
The results of the study can be summarized as follows.
1. From sociodemographic factors, grade, sex, academic records and family income influenced their satisfaction at the appearance, self-esteem and their school adaptation capabilities. The factor that made difference in their satisfaction at the appearance interacting with their grade was family income, that made significant difference in self-esteem was academic record, and those that made difference in the school adaptation were family income, academic records and the education of the father.
2. The satisfaction at the appearance, self-esteem and school adaptation in the adolescence showed positive correlation in all the areas. In other words, the more they are satisfied with their appearances, the higher their self-esteem is and the more they are adapted to school. Additionally the students with high self-esteem are better adapted to school life.
3. The factor that affected the youths most on their school adaptation was self-esteem. In case of elementary, secondary school students, it was school self-esteem and in case of university students it was general self-esteem. The satisfaction at the appearance did not make any influence on the school adaptation of grade 5 elementary school students. The area of the satisfaction on the appearance was changed from face, the whole body and the upper body.
4. The medium effect of the self-esteem on the influence of the satisfaction at the appearance of the youths on their school adaptation was shown significant only when the subjects covered the whole youths or restricted to the university students only. In case of grade 5 students, the satisfaction at the appearance did not make any influence on their school adaptation. Thus the medium effects could not be verified. As they got older from elementary school to middle and high school students, the influence of the satisfaction at the appearance seemed to increase.
As such, the factors that made the big influence on the school adaptation in the youth period were shown as school self-esteem and general self-esteem. As they got older, they showed more interest in their appearance. Thus, we need to enhance their self-esteem by understanding their value and supporting them emotionally as we need to make them think of their appearance positively.
