The purpose of this study is to examine literary curability pattern and its meaning based on the fact that Korean modern poems showed that it had psychological curability as an essential function of literature. In chapter 1, the history of study as to literature curability as well as rhythm, metaphor, symbolization, image, poem pattern which are regarded to be curable effect through poems was examined. In chapter 2, the method of poems, curable effect, the concept and purpose of poems curability which were studied so far and the theoretical principle and method were studied. In chapter 3, divided into four periods as to Korean modern poems, the curability pattern and meaning of Korean modern poems based on three typical poets per their periods were examined.
First, the poems during the japanese colonial rule(1910-1945s) were analyzed through the way of writing poems, 'rhythm' as a way of poetic curability to cope with national loss and realistic agonies. Second, the poetic curability pattern to escape from problem consciousness called non-existence and the destruction of human nature shown in the post-war poems(1950-1960s) was analyzed through metaphor and symbolization. Third, the poetic curability pattern as to the loss of nature and life appeared during the process of industrialization(pre and post 1970s) was examined through image. Lastly, the poetic curability toward human alienation shown in the poems during the period of democratization(post-1980s) was analyzed through the problem pattern, 'poem pattern'. The reality which each poet belonged to, was thought to bring about psychological problems in her/his inner minds in one way or another, which were relieved of and sublimated by poems. That is, self-curability is achieved through some methods in writing poems such as rhythm, metaphor, symbolization, image, poetic pattern.
In passage 1, the poetic curability pattern toward sovereignty loss and resistance against Japanese colonial rule was analyzed based on the poems written by Han Yong-woon, Kim So-wol, Lee Yook-sa. Han Yong-woon was very anxious for achieving the harmonious unity between despairing reality and ego or self through creating rhythm in his poems. Kim So-wol made it possible for the inner problems to be conscious and objective through the rhythm of Korean traditional rhythm 7.5 numbers and 3 meters, through which he obtained emotional self-control. Meanwhile, Lee Yook-sa showed that he achieved catharsis self-regulation by presenting the subject consciousness as a poetic structure such as repetition and pause in time, in accordance with ready-made rules, never presenting emotion without any forms through the way of control in order that emotion may not be overflowed in their poems.
In passage 2, poetic pattern of non-existence and curability of human nature shown in post-war poems was analyzed based on poems written by Kim Soo-young, Kim Chhon-soo, and Seo Jeong-ju through metaphor and symbolization. Kim Soo-young understood the reality and resisted against the country through satirical metaphor and it can be regarded as a language device as poetic curability. Kim Choon-soo purified emotion through his meaningless poems by dint of melting his own emotional poison into meaningless poems, overcoming the metaphor objects. Seo Jeong-ju achieved emotional purification and made it successful for the chaotic desire for love into the primitive life through the method of symbolization.
In passage 3, nature loss and the poetic curability pattern of life caused by industrialization were analyzed based on poems written by some poets such as Kim Ji-ha, Shin Gyeong-lim, Shin Dong-yeob through image. Kim Ji-ha found life out of the resistance against suppression and severing, expressing it into accepting image , which contributed to making a sort of energy or motivation of paving way to emoton recovery and life quest. Shin Gyeong-lim showed the recovery of the community of people through the prototypical image such as the earth, fruits, rivers, fires, lights, dreams for the needy and the alienated. Meanwhile, Shin Dong-yeob saw the reality as the contrastive image, construing its curability to the psychological liberation and reality through overcoming the process.
In passage 4, when it comes to curability pattern of the resistance consciousness and human alienation especially shown in poems pre-and-post democratization of Korea, poems written by a group of poets such as Kim Nam-joo, Park No-hae, Hwang Ji-woo were thoughted to be successful in insight and integration to the reality by means of poetic forms. Kim Nam-joo expressed pathos of denying reality in his poems, attempting psychological utterance via formal device, performing convey of emotion and communication. Park No-hae, through his poems, achieved the communication of subject and the recovery of unity stemmed from human liberation and labor liberation, obtaining realistic criticism at the same time. Hwang Ji-woo destroyed the form of poems, alleviating realistic suppression and psycholgy, venturing to find a new poem form to seek for the insight and integration or unity to the real world.
Through the above-mentioned study, the curability shown in Korean modern poems was examined. Divided into four periods, the tendency of the problem consciousness expressed in modern poems can be construed in accordance with each period, yet the inner conflict the poet suffered as a social being derived from the reality, sublimating it as a means of curing the poet of the suffering agony. The reality understanding and problem consciousness stemmed from the reality for each poet mostly derived from despair and frustration, suppression and control, error and disorder considered to be a negative consciousness to the real world, presenting resistance, the overcoming of human alienation, entity recovery, the wish of community and eagerness for life.
However, through this study, the mechanism of enabling this kind of mental overcoming and recovery was regarded to be available through a variety of poetic devices such as rhythm, metaphor and symbolization, image, poetic forms. The inner psychological conflict and agony stemmed from the concerned poet usually incite the inner desire of the poet and express her/his emotion for emotional switch via various mechanism of writing poems, resisting aggressively, and beefing up her/his ego or self as well.
The effect which many creative principles built in poems was thought to be an emotional relieving of the suppressed and unbalanced psychology poets have and a mechanism of getting over emotion and recovering emotion. The Korean modern poems above-mentioned is an emotional report and a result of psychological agony unrelieved of among the un-consciousness, yet an alternative solution or a kind of cure, suggesting that Korean modern poems can be a purified text for emotion cure as an attempt of recovering poets' truth.
