As a series of processes to explore the most appropriate occupation for a person, it is not only important to generally examine one's personality, interests and values but also to analyze inherited occupational traits.
That is, occupational type analysis determines whether one prefers to belong to an organization, to manage an independent business, or to perform individual freelancing works. Occupational exploration can be complete when the test also examines risk taking level as to whether one prefers stable activities despite low pay or welcomes challenges and creative activities for satisfaction and high wage.
From this perspective, 402 students attending 4-year universities located in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon, Gyeongbuk and Chungnam were selected for occupational type analysis using their birth information based on the theories of Myongri. Correlation between career self-efficacy and risk taking level was also analyzed.
Occupational type was classified according to Myongri occupational apriority into three types, including employment, management and freelance. Career self-efficacy was classified into self evaluation, goal setting, occupational information and problem solving. Risk taking level was classified into job selection, monetary management and interpersonal relationship. 'Personality and Occupational Apriority Test' program of the Research Center of Apriority Aptitude Test (patent no. 10-0834389) was used to analyze the three occupational types: employment, management and freelance.
SPSSWIN 12.0 was used to process data from this study with frequency analysis, one-way ANOVA and correlation analysis. The results of this study are as follows.
First, as a result of testing the difference in career self-efficacy according to occupational type, significant difference was found in self evaluation, goal setting and problem solving for employment type, management type and freelance type. The result for occupational information was rejected. Employment type showed lowest scores for all items. While management type had similar scores as freelance type for self evaluation and problem solving, it showed highest score for goal setting.
Second, as a result of testing the difference in risk taking level according to occupational type, significant difference was found in job selection, monetary management and interpersonal relationship for employment type, management type, and freelance type. Management type showed highest scores, followed by freelance and employment types.
Third, as a result of testing the relationship between career self-efficacy and risk taking level, most items showed correlation. However, extremely low correlation was shown between occupational information among career self-efficacy and job selection and interpersonal relationship. There was almost no correlation between occupational information and monetary management.
Occupational types including employment, management and freelance are classifications given by inherited occupational traits of individuals. Risk taking level of university students can be measured using occupational types, and their preferred activities can also be analyzed. Information about whether a person prefers challenging work or stable work is more than just the type of occupation and duty. Each occupational type provides important information for occupational exploration by dividing into organizational activities and individual activities.
Career guidance should not only tell appropriate occupations but also include effective career exploration, appropriate job guidance, preparation for adaptation, and preparation for another job to get ready for old age. Therefore, the study on occupational types and risk taking level according to Myongri occupational apriority supplements a few aspects neglected by existing aptitude tests, attempting to examine occupational traits with a completely new meaning.
This study can be used as a basic data in career counseling for university students who are looking for specific job exploration prior to entering the work force. The author of this study wishes to contribute to accomplishing appropriate job exploration for students.
