This paper reports on a survey which was designed to investigate the relation between English names and identity of Korean EFL learners. The study focuses on three questions: (1) In what ways do Korean EFL learners’ use English names? (2) How is their English name use related to language and cultural identities? (3) To what extent are Korean EFL learners aware of their identities in association with English names? The data were collected from 240 Korean university and high school students who are taking English courses. The results of the questionnaire data show that learners adopt an English name mainly from English class and use it to facilitate interactions in English-speaking context. English name users appear to have a more flexible language and cultural identity than non-users, which means English name users are more strongly motivated to learn English and more willing to adapt to the new language and culture. Among the learners were English names perceived as a useful communication and adaptation strategy rather than an identity forming or threatening behavior. The study provides a descriptive analysis of the use of English names among Korean EFL learners and proposes that the use of English names indicates their openness to the new language and culture.
