The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the dry aromatic inhalation therapy on the stress and fatigue of emergency care-unit nurses.
The study design was randomized control-group pre-test and post-test design.
The data were collected from April 9, to May 28, 2009
The initial subjects were 52 emergency care-unit nurses in the I and G hospitals, and a total of 45 nurses except for seven nurses excluded were assigned to experimental(n=24) and control(n=21) group.
As a pre-test, the perceived stress, physical and psychological stress response, work stress, and level of fatigue were measured among two groups. The dry aromatic inhalation therapy was administerd to experimental group two times per a day for three weeks, and as a post-test, the perceived stress, physical and psychological stress response, work stress, and level of fatigue were measured among two groups using same method with one used in pre-test.
The SPSS 17.00 program was used and the -test, t-test, and paired t-test were performed for statistical analysis.
The results of this study are as follows:
1) The level of stress perceived by the experimental group treated with the dry aromatic inhalation therapy will be lower than that perceived by control group was supported.
2) The level of stress response of the experimental group treated with the dry aromatic inhalation therapy will be lower than that of control group was supported.
2-1) The level of physical stress response of the experimental group treated with the dry aromatic inhalation therapy will be lower than that of control group was supported.
2-2) The level of psychological stress response of the experimental group treated with the dry aromatic inhalation therapy will be lower than that of control group was supported.
3) The level of job stress of the experimental group treated with the dry aromatic inhalation therapy will be lower than that of control group was supported.
4) The level of fatigue of the experimental group treated with the dry aromatic inhalation therapy will be lower than that of control group was supported.
The results of this study demonstrated that the dry aromatic inhalation therapy using oil composed of sweet orange, lavender, and chamomile roman oils has effects in reducing the perceived stress, physical and psychological stress response, work stress, and level of fatigue. It is recommended, therefore, to use aromatic inhalation therapy as a method in order to improve job satisfaction and life quality of them by managing stress and fatigue of emergency care-unit nurse.
