From their very beginning, Korean independent films have represented marginalized groups, such as laborers, women and the poor. Consequently, these films have spoken for social minorities who were either misrepresented or underrepresented in mainstream media. It is therefore not surprising that some Korean independent films have started to represent diasporic Koreans; however, the fact that these films were released in the heyday of neo-liberal capitalism remains to be fully considered.
‘Our School’ and ‘Let the Blue River Run’ are Korean independent films set in Korean diasporic spaces-Hokkaido Chosun School and Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture-that depict the way in which Korean Japanese and Korean Chinese adolescents come of age by embracing nationalism and ethnicity in a humanitarian way. The films were regarded as illustrations of “true” nationalism that is based on humanism, which stands in stark contrast to the mainstream media’s voracious exploitation of diasporic subjects. Since these films are directed by Korean filmmakers, though, I studied the frame of “accented cinema” proposed by Hamid Naficy and re-examined those two films by focusing on the position of directors who represent the diasporic experience.
Before that, I reconsidered the myth of authenticity that is immanent in the Korean independent film movement. In addition, ‘Our School’ and ‘Let the Blue River Run’ expose the dilemma of nationalism in the Korean independent film movement. The Korean diaspora began with the Japanese occupation and the subsequent division of Korean peninsula. I focused on the fact that the psychological diaspora not only affects diasporic subjects but also people in the homeland. Thus, the issue of psychological diaspora comes to involve the mentality of the people in the homeland who imagine, acknowledge, or long for the diasporic space.
Hamid Naficy conceptualized films that were made by filmmakers who had experienced exile or diaspora as “Accented Cinema.” I designated ‘Our School’ and ‘Let the Blue River Run’ as representative of such accented cinema. These two films manifest the stylistic characters of accented cinema categorized by Hamid Naficy, but they are not made by diasporic subjects. Furthermore, the “accents” of these films are represented by Korean independent filmmakers who are “representing/speaking for” the diasporic subjects.
The documentary ‘Our School’ is based on the director's three years with Japanese Korean students and teachers in Hokkaido, Japan. Even though this film shows the typical style of accented cinema, there is an imagined accent of the director, overlapped with the accent of diasporic subjects. In addition, the film depicts Hokkaido Chosun School not only as a shelter but also as an closed border. Moreover, during the distribution, Hokkaido Chosun School was seen as an alternative for the Korean education system and, in this process, the accent that was made through the colonization and division of Korea, as well as the diasporic experience, was removed.
‘Let the Blue River Run’, a feature film about Korean Chinese adolescents in Yanbian, China, clearly shows the antithetic chronotopes between homeland and the host country, but in reverse. This inversion is created by the director, who represents the diasporic experience. The film explains the interaction between Korea and the Yanbian diasporic community as a type of contamination, saying that the ethnic purity which had been preserved from the invasion of capitalism is now threatened by South Korean culture. It also shows that Yanbian people become re-purified by going to Dooman River and Mountain Baekdoo, both of which are stereotyped ethnic sites for Koreans. And the producer of the film watches all these procedures as a holder of the gaze who has the power.
‘Our School’ and ‘Let the Blue River Run’ represent/speak for the diasporic subjects, but they solidify the gap between the diasporic Koreans and Korean society. Moreover, because of the myth of authenticity in Korean independent films, the hierarchy immanent in representation itself was veiled. In unveiling the myth of authenticity, Korean independent films need to search for strategies for representational resistance through which they can represent the marginalized, and through which they can look for new ways to coexist.
