The purpose of this study was to analyze the process of students finding inquiry problems in self-inquiry activities in the elementary school science curriculum revised in 2007 and the number and types of their questions asked during the process. In addition, this study was conducted to provide implications for the process of finding inquiry problems. For those purposes, the following research questions were : first, what is the process of finding inquiry problems in self-inquiry activities in fourth grade science. Secondly, what are the number and types of questions produced by the students in the process of finding inquiry problems in self-inquiry activities in the fourth grade. The subjects include one teacher in charge of a class as Y elementary school science, which is a model school for science education in K city that includes self-inquiry activities in its curriculum. The other subjects were 26 fourth grade students. After the finding of inquiry problems, the teacher participated in a non-structured in-depth interview and questions were collected from the students' inquiry logs, which contained their practical achievements of inquiry. All the interviews were recorded and transcribed. Their contents were repeated and reviewed to extract the process of finding inquiry problems. The students' questions were analyzed with the "Types of Questions" developed by Chin et al.(2002). In order to raise the reliability level of the analyses, the investigator analyzed the data with an expert in science education and a research colleague. The first grade teacher was asked to evaluate the analysis contents in order to secure the validity of the analysis results.
The process of finding inquiry problems in self-inquiry activities in elementary school science occurred in the order of choosing a topic, making a network for the topic, introducing a method for making self-inquiry problems, developing a need for questioning strategies and types of questions, teaching and making learning questions, mutually reviewing and evaluating questions, and finding out inquiry problems. The inquiry problems were investigated with various kinds of curiosity and questions within the limited scientific situation but the children had a difficult time converting the questions into the ones that were worth inquiring about through group discussions. During the process, they made various types of questions, which varied in frequency. The research findings provide implications for the importance of teachers as science experts to set up strategies to offer scaffolding fit for the students' levels and guide them through the directions and methods of inquiry according to the types of questions so that they can discover new inquiry problems on their own. Thus it is required to develop activity programs for finding inquiry problems applicable to the instruction of the process of finding inquiry problems in self-inquiry activities in elementary school science.
