This study is for understanding how the multicultural education in moral education has done in Korean society, as well as for determining several points to be improved for better multicultural education.
As the 7th Educational Curriculum, the purpose of moral education is "to educate fundamental lifestyles, proprieties and moral standards, recommended for members of Korean society, to raise judgment for solving moral problems in daily lives, to develop citizenship, national consciousness, concepts about world peace and humanity, and to build moral tendency for systematizing and practicing the ideals and principles." This helps humans to deliberate on how to live as community members, and to put it into practice. Moreover it helps members of society to lead desirable lifes not only as a Korean but also as citizens of the world. We can see that these respects are remarkably consistent with multicultural education for understanding various cultures and respecting others.
Multicultural education can be constituted by contents about understanding cultures, cooperation, identity and variety of cultures. These contents should be understood as thing not only in personal daily lives but also in nations, ethnics and global wide. Examining closely the process of multicultural education, in the 1st~4th educational curriculum, moral education mainly focused on anticommunism. In 5th educational curriculum, consiousness of individuals, logical solutions for social conflicts, and educations for unification and national security were emphasized. In 7th educational curriculum, multicultural educations and establishment of multicultural morality have became more important according to changes to new world and situations.
Moreover, in 2007 Revised curriculum, the importance of multicultural education have been emphasized even more. Analyzing these contents with factors of multicultural education like the actual cultures, the purpose identity, the relational cooperation, the comprehensive equality the fundamental diversity, it was revealed that there were much more factors of above in 2007 Revised curriculum than the 1st~7th educational curriculum. But these contents were not related organically and unitedly. Bedsides there were focused on particular subject; the purpose identity. For improving these problems, multicultural education should be unified by the actual cultures, the purpose identity, the relational cooperation, the comprehensive equality and the fundamental diversity, and be educated to realize these goals actually.
Roles and efforts of education is one of the methods for solving conflicts and problems in various societies. Especially for social problems occurred by absence of moral values, efforts for moral education can play significant roles. Therefor, to realize multicultural education effectively in moral education,
First, moral education should be done from perspective not as identity, cooperation in monoculture, but as cooperation, identity, equality and diversity in multicultures.
Second, the educational curriculum is needed for understanding self-discovery, self-improvement, setting own visions and missions for happy lives, love and consideration for neighbors, human dignity, equality between genders, world peace and humanity.
Third, the view of the world, humans, life and values should be clear, integrated and defined systematically. This is because, in the multicultural society, the virtue should be got across from teachers to not only students but also parents and others. These virtues could be subdivided philosophically; related to from individuals as subjects of morality, to natures and transcendental beings. That means human beings and the morality, the proprieties and the morality, the environment and the morality, the culture and the morality, the religion and the morality and the morality combined with philosophical fields.
Fourth, for the multicultural education, the role and cognizance of teachers take great importance. Teachers should make students understand the multicultures, involving problems in the multicultural society, as well as teach them about contents of multicultural education.
Therefore, to form values for helping students to adjust well to the multicultural society, the contents of the multicultural education, such as the actual cultures, the purpose identity, the relational cooperation, the comprehensive equality and the fundamental diversity, should be unified systematically and organically and be educated. In addition, the multicultural education should be for all, not dividing the society into major groups and minor groups.
