The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of the reduction of bicultural stress and the improvement of peer relation of children in multicultural family.
This study was carried out in the order of program research, subject selection, pre-test, operation and application of art therapy programs, post-test, data process from 2009 August to October 12.
7 children under their parents' agreement out of 12 children in multicultural families, who attended H elementary school located in I city of Chollabukdo, participated in this study. Group art therapy was carried out for a total of 14 sessions (60 minutes each session, twice a week).
To measure bicultural stress, SAFE of Hovery&King(1996) revised by No Chung-rae and Hong Jin-ju(2004) was used, and the possibility of isolation among peers out of sub elements of K-CYP made by professor Im Ho-chan in 2009, was used as a test tool to measure the improvement of peer relation. And, KFD and KSD were compared and analyzed after pre-test and post-test.
Accumulated research data were t-tested by using SPSS 17.0 statistical program.
The questions of this study are as follows.
First, what effects does group art therapy have on the reduction of bicultural stress of children in multicultural families?
Second, what effects does group art therapy have on the improvement of peer relation of children in multicultural families?
The results of this study are as follows.
First, it is shown that group art therapy can have some effects on the reduction of bicultural stress of children in multicultural families. Children in multicultural families explore and understand their parents' countries through group art therapy, and reduce their bicultural stress by posing receptive attitudes toward bicultural surroundings.
The bicultural stress score before the test was 23.286, and the score after the test was 14.857. It shows that the result of t-test was t=6.196(p<0.001) and there was a significant difference. After the test, the level of bicultural stress of the children who participated in the study was lower.
Second, group art therapy can have some effects on the improvement of peer relation of children in multicultural families. They recognize and explore their peers through group art therapy, and peer relation gets better by sharing their own thoughts.
The score of peer relation before the test was 63.286 and that after the test was 53.143. It shows the result of t-test was t=2.569(p<0.05) and there was a significant difference. The result of the peer relation 5 out of the seven children who participated in this test was better.
These results show that group art therapy has effects on the reduction of bicultural stress and the improvement of peer relation of children in multicultural families.
