This study aims to analyze the effects of participating in the class of dance education program on emotional intelligence of children in welfare facilities by each factor and by demographic characteristics and provide basic information for the development of emotional intelligence of children in welfare facilities. The subjects of the study were 20 lower graders in elementary school(1st~3rd grades) in G welfare facility located in K city by random sampling. After carrying out factor analysis, reliability analysis and frequency analysis on materials collected before and after class of dance education program by using SPSS 15.0 Version, independent variable t-test and two-way ANOVA were conducted to verify the differences between the pre-test and the post-test according to demographic characteristics and if there were significant differences, Scheffe verification was used as post test. The results of analyzing the data are as follows:
First, dance education program helped emotional intelligence of children in welfare facilities in improving the factors such as emotional recognition, emotional expression, emotional regulation, and emotional utilization after the participation in class more than before the class participation. Among those abilities, the ability of emotional expression was 2.65±0.43 points before participating in dance education program class but it was 3.89±0.38 points after participating in the class. Accordingly, the ability of emotional expression demonstrated the most significant difference, showing 1.24 higher score after the participation in the class compared to before the class participation.
Second, dance education program according to demographic characteristics(by gender, by grade, by the number of family, and by the number of brothers and sisters) helped emotional intelligence of children in welfare facilities in improving the factors such as emotional recognition, emotional expression, emotional regulation, and emotional utilization after the participation in class more than before the class participation. It showed significant differences(pre-post) between female student groups according to gender and it also showed significant differences between 1st grade groups by grade. According to the number of family, in the case of a child with 1 family member, there was significant differences between groups and in the case of a child with two brothers, there were the most significant differences between groups in the number of brothers and sisters.
Generally four factors among five factors of emotional intelligence showed significant difference and emotional recognition and emotional expression helped improve emotional intelligence compared to other factors after the participation in class more than before the class participation.
Third, dance education program among five factors of emotional intelligence did not improve the empathy ability of children in welfare facilities.
To sum up, it was found that dance education program has an effect on the abilities of recognized emotional recognition, emotional expression, emotional regulation, emotional utilization, etc. in emotional intelligence of children in welfare facilities. Therefore, it is considered that children in welfare facilities feel emotional stability, take their own emotions and desires out and confidently express themselves through dance, and they are positively influenced by adaptation to group activities such as school life and social life, etc. through physical contact with others.
