This study aims at establishing measures to improve International Understanding Education (IUE) in the educational field by covering theoretical background related to areas, contents, teaching and learning method of IUE in Society subject in primary education and by understanding problems through analysis of contents of IUE.
This study is limited to the contents that UNESCO presented for comparison and analysis of contents of IUE in Society subject from Year 3 to Year 6. In addition, it is not an empirical study on how IUE is performed in the educational field in schools.
For this study, firstly, the author presents consideration on theoretical background such as purposes and contents of IUE in Society subject of primary school with general aspects of IUE such as its concepts, areas, purposes and contents and then analyzes the system of curriculum of IUE of Society subject in primary education in order to discover current situation of IUE.
In addition, this study extracts units related to IUE from Society textbooks in primary schools, and analyzed the units by dividing them into education on UN and its professional institution, other countries, human right, and environment. Along with this, as a result of analyzing problems in introduction and implementation of measures to improve IUE in Society subject in primary schools, the author believes that we can achieve our anticipated results by carrying out IUE through direction for improvement of IUE and teaching and learning method.
Matters that we should consider in designing teaching and learning IUE by extracting topics from education on UN and its professional institution, other countries, human right, and environment are restructure of selective contents according to students' interest, contents that can be easily seen and found around us, various case-centered activities and experiences for students rather than simple explanation given by teachers, and development of not only knowledge and understanding but also function and attitudes. With this, experts and scholars share the results of this study on IUE and form a network applying e-mail and internet among teachers in the educational field, which will help to improve IUE if we share the contents and methods on IUE.
