This study aims to clarify the level of college students' stress, coping strategies, self-esteem and suicidal ideation, the effect of stress, coping strategies, self-esteem on suicidal ideation, and the direct and indirect effect of their variables.
The research questions to examine on this study are as follows.
1. What are the levels of stress, coping strategies, self-esteem and suicidal ideation of college students' according to the social demographic variables?
2. What are the relations between college students' stress, coping strategies, self-esteem and suicidal ideation?
3. What is the relative influence of college students' stress, coping strategies, self-esteem on suicidal ideation and in what route does it appear?
The subject of this study consists of college students' living in Busan. Study tools consist of stress standard, coping strategies standard, self-esteem standard, suicidal ideation standard and questionnaires about the social demographic background variables of college students'. Study process and analysis method are carried out by performing actual investigation after pre-investigation, and final 497 copies were used in data analysis. For response materials, frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation, variable analysis, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, route analysis were applied to analyze them, and other analyses were performed by SPSS WIN 14.0 program.
In summary, the main results of this study from such study analysis are as the following.
First, as a result of analyzing differences of related variables according to college students' gender, stress and suicide ideation were high in female students, and problem-centered coping method was used more in male students. As a result of analyzing differences of related variables according to monthly home income, urgent problem stress, emotion-centered coping method, and suicide ideation appeared higher as monthly income is lower. As a result of analyzing differences of related variables according to the number of suicide ideation, stress, emotion-centered coping method, and suicide ideation were higher and self-esteem lower as the number of suicide ideation was greater.
Second, as a result of examining the correlation among stress and coping method, self-esteem, and suicide ideation, male students' suicide ideation had positive relation with stress and emotion-centered coping method, and negative relation with problem-centered coping method, self-esteem. Self-esteem had negative relation with stress, and positive relation with problem-centered coping method. Female students's suicide ideation had positive relation with stress and emotion-centered coping method, and negative relation with self-esteem. Self-esteem had negative relation with stress and emotion-centered coping method, and positive relation with problem-centered coping method.
Third, as a result of analyzing direct and indirect effects of stress and coping method about college students' suicide ideation and their self-esteem, human relations stress, self-esteem, emotion-centered coping method, and problem-centered coping method directly affected suicide ideation in that order in male students. Human relations stress directly affected suicide ideation, and also showed indirect effects through self-esteem. Self-esteem directly affected suicide ideation, and showed indirect effects through problem-centered coping method. Self-esteem, emotion-centered coping method, and human relations stress directly affected suicide ideation in that order in female students. In both male and female students, it appeared that urgent problem stress only had indirect effects on suicide ideation with emotion-centered coping method and self-esteem as the medium.
