The purpose of this research is to find how gender length and purpose of stay of international students from Japan does effect on Acculturation Type and Adaptatioon to College. For this, this study made 103 Japanese students in 5 universities in Daegu, Kyungbuk, and Busan engage in it. 103 students completed the Scale of Acculturation Type and the questionaries for Adaptatioon to College.
This study has three theses; first, it tried to find how different Acculturation Type are with regard to gender, length, and purpose of stay of Japanes students. Second, it tried to understand how gender, length, and purpose of stay gives effects on the level of Adaptatioon to College.
Finally, the relationship between Acculturation Type and the level of Adaptatioon to College was under scrutiny.
The findings of this study are the followings;
First, male students showed marginalization type while female did integration acculturation type. The Japanese international students whose purpose was to learn Korean language indicated integration type, and those who wanted to study their own majors suggested marginalization ones. However, there were no differences between Acculturation Type with regard to the length of stay.
Second, female students indicated higher campus life and social adjustment than male. The short-term international students - less than 6 months in the length of stay - showed higher adaptibility to campus life than the long-term ones whose length of stay was more than 7 months. Given the total scores of Adaptation to College in purpose of stay, the score of Japanese international students who wanted to learn Korean was significantly higher than that of majoring students. This study suggested that the level of schoolworks and environmental adaptibility were high in the subcategories.
Finally, when the total scores of Adaptation to College were compared with respect to Acculturation Type of Japanese international students, the score of those who had integrated patterns was higher than that of those who separated and marginalization ed patterns, and the level of adjustment for assimilation patterns was higher than that of marginalization. To be specific, those who had integration type showed higher level of schoolworks, social, and environmental adjustments than those who had marginalization ones. Furthermore, the students who had assimilation type indicated higher level of social adjustment than those who had separated and marginalization ones.
For previous researches of Chinese students in Korea, there had been no differences of Acculturation Type and Adaptation to College levels with regard to gender, while there were many marginalization type of male students and integrated ones of female among Japanese students. Female students showed higher level of Adaptatioon to College than male ones. For the differences of cultural adjustments patterns in the length of stay, Japanese students showed no Acculturation type, while Chinese ones did high assimilation initially. Nevertheless, the findings that integrated patterns indicates higher level of Acculturation type than separation and marginalization ones were the same as those of previous studies. The reason for these differences may be that Japanese can be sorted as East Asian as Chinese, but they have different characteristics. As far as the differences of purpose of stay and financial conditions are concerned, it is necessary that the policies and strategies of campus adjustments should be prepared for Japanese students. This study has locally biased limits and was practiced to insufficient number of subjects ― 103 Japanese studnets staying in Busan and Daegu. It is necessary to have further fundamental researches that scrutinize how different Japanese are from Korean and Chinese and to have various studies of Japanese international students in many fields.
