The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between mother-child interaction and child's cognitive and linguistic development.
For this purpose, the research question established are as follows :
1. Is there any relationship between mother's interaction and child's interaction?
2. Is there any relationship between mother-child interaction and child's cognitive development?
3. Is there any relationship between mother-child interaction and child's linguistic development?
The subjects of this study are fifty children and their mothers enrolled at kindergartens located in KyungGi-Do. Eighteen four-year-old children and thirty-two five-year-old children were attended. To measure mother-child interaction, Pianta and Harber's observational quarterly was used. I visited children's home and observed mother-child interaction during some problem-solving situation.
To measure cognitive development, Lutterjohann's IQ Test was used and to measure linguistic development, Kyemong-Sa Language Test was used. Collected data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, means and Pearson's biavahate correlation.
The results obtained from this study are as follows:
First, there were significant relationship between mother's interaction and child's interaction. When mother showed suppotive attitude, her child showed positive affection. When mother showed appropriate instruction, her child showed task-oriented persistence.
Second, there were significant relationship between mother-child interaction and child's cognitive development. That was, when mother intsructed child with adequate hints and verbalization, with mother's confidence, with respect for child's autonomy, with less intrusivess, child's cognitive development was good.
Third, there were significant relationship between mother-child interaction and child's linguistic development. That was, when mother instructed child with adequate hins and verbalization, with self confidence, with respect for child's autonomy, with emotional support, with child's positive affect, child's linguistic development was good.
Following those findings, we can conclude that mother-child interaction is important to child's cognitive and linguistic development.
