The purpose of this study was to find out desirable way of child-rearing and locus of control to develop career maturity. This study conducted a survey on 894 sixth grade students.
To compare differences in parental child rearing attitude, locus of control, and career maturity according to children's gender and residential region, t-test was applied. Correlation analysis was conducted to find out inter-relations between parental child rearing attitude, locus of control, and career maturity. In addition, multiple regression analysis was conducted to see the impact of parental child rearing attitude and locus of control on career maturity for children.
    The results were as follow.
First, there was no difference in parental child rearing attitude by region. Only autonomy and control factors showed significant difference in father's attitude. Fathers in urban area were perceived more autonomous to their children than those in rural area.
Also, only autonomy and control factors showed significant difference in father's attitude by students' gender. Female students perceived their fathers' attitude as more liberal than male students.
Second, there was no difference in children's locus of control factors by region. However, there was significant difference in those factors by gender. Female students showed more internal control tendency compared to male students. Third, although there was no difference in career maturity attitude by region, career maturity ability showed significant difference. Students living in urban area showed higher career maturity ability compared to those living in rural area. In addition, female students showed higher career maturity attitude and ability compared to male students.
Fourth, there was significant correlation between parental attitude and locus of control factors by region and gender. In addition, mothers' attitude had more impact on children's locus of control than fathers'.
Fifth, there was significant correlation between parental attitude and career maturity attitude and ability regardless of region and gender. However, there was no significant correlation between father's rational attitude and children's ability to choose career.
In urban area, there was no significant correlation between father's attitude and decision making ability for children. In rural area, there was no significant correlation between father's attitude and children's ability to choose jobs.
Regardless of gender, parental attitude had significant impact on children's career maturity. While parents' love, autonomy, achievement, and reason oriented method had no impact on male students' decision making ability, they had impact on female students'.
Sixth, there was significant correlation between locus of control and career maturity by region and gender. Students with internal control had a tendency to show higher ability and attitude in career maturity.
Finally, this study conducted stepwise multiple regressions to see what impact parental attitude, locus of control, region, and gender have on students' career maturity. Amount of explained variance in career maturity attitude were 11% for locus of control, 3% for mother's attitude, and 1% for gender. Amount of explained variance in career maturity ability were 7% for locus of control, 4% for gender, 2% for region, and 1% for mother's attitude. The one with the most significant effect on career maturity attitude and ability was locus of control. That is, elementary school students' career maturity can be improved when parents help them get internal control tendency with love, autonomy, achievement, and reason oriented method.
