The purpose of this research is to examine the role and effect of family resilience as a mediator and adjusting variable in the relationship of family resilience with stress and adaptation into school life, perceived by adolescents by identifying the effect of the stress of single parent family and both parents family on the adaptation of school life.
The research performed the questionnaire survey through high school, local community welfare center, support center for single parent family, and self-support group in metropolitan areas; Seoul, Gyeonggi province, Incheon city, and data of total 690 people were analyzed. The research data was analyzed as SPSS 12.0 for Windows program with the statistics processing.
The analysis was conducted by examining the difference of general characteristics (gender, school grade, religion, school results, economic status), stress of each characteristic (daily life stress, family stress), family resilience (family hardiness, family cohesion, family adaptation), school life adaptation(school interest, academic achievements, norm-observance). Secondly, the correlation of family stress according to family structure(single parent family, both parents family), family resilience, and adaptation into school life was explored. Lastly, the meditating or adjusting effect of family resilience on family stress according to family structure and adaptation into school life was investigated.
Analysis results are as follows:
First, difference of measurement variables according to general characteristics is like: Significant difference appeared in daily life stress according to gender, school grade, school results, and economic status among stress factors of both parents family. Meanwhile, significant difference appeared only in the school grade and school results of single parent family. In terms of family stress, while both parents family showed the difference according to school grade, school results, and economic status, single parents family showed difference only in school results and economic status. In other words, it was revealed that both parent family would receive stress in general characteristics on the whole, but single parent family would be chiefly influenced by school results and economic status.
Second, adolescents of both parents family and single parent family showed a significant difference in stress, adaptation into school life, and family resilience. Especially, daily life stress of single parent family was higher than that of both parents family, and the level of norm-observance of single parent family was lower than that of both parents family. However, family hardiness of single parent family appeared to be high. It is estimated that it would be the result of transference from the existing weakness oriented perspectives of single parent family into strength oriented perspectives.
Third, it appeared that the correlation of stress and adaptation into school life in both single parent family and both parent family shows a negative correlation. Meanwhile, the correlation of family resilience and adaptation into school life shows a positive relationship except for norm-observation of single parent family.
Fourth, variables of mediating effect in both parents family and single parent family were the same as family cohesion and family adaptation, but the difference was shown in the subordinate factor of adaptation into school life, which is dependent variable. Family cohesion in both parents family had a mediating effect on interest in school, norm-observation, and family adaptation had a mediating effect on interest in school and academic achievement, while, family cohesion and family adaptation in single parent family showed mediating effect only in interest in school. In other words, it appeared that mediating effect of family resilience is more feasible for both parents family than one parent family. Moreover, according to subordinate factor of adaptation into school life, mediating variable was differently applied. Accordingly, it is crucial to provide support for appropriate mediating factor by discovering appropriate mediating variable according to subordinate factors of adaptation into school life.
Fifth, it appeared that family hardiness in both parents family and single parent family has the adjusting effect on daily life stress and interest in school equally. However, it was revealed that in the case of single parent family, family hardiness also has the adjusting effect on family stress and interest in school, and family adaptation has the adjusting effect on family stress and norm-observance. Contrary to the results of mediating effect of family resilience, adjusting effect of single parent family was higher than that of both parent family. It demonstrates that the adjusting effect of family resilience was greater in single parent family than both parent family. Accordingly, the development of the program is required for enhancing family resilience of single parent.
Meanings of this research are as follows: First, it clarifies the difference of family resilience by comparing family resilience of class, vulnerable to stress and general class through the comparative analysis of the effect of family resilience according to family structure, which is considered as only general characteristics, even though existing researches have focused on class, vulnerable to stress. Second, it examines the subordinate factors of each measurement variable through subdivision. As a result, it was possible to examine that each subordinate factor of adaptation into school life has what difference and effect. Third, this research has significance in that it confirms the adjusting effect of family hardiness by dealing it as the factor of family resilience, which has not been dealt with in the study of adolescents, even though family cohesion and family adaptation have been studied in the family and school life of adolescents among factors of family resilience.
