The purpose of this study is to investigate the basic swimming materials based on the relationship among variations of sport’s commitment and achievement goal orientation in order to improve swimming participants’ ability and lead their constant participation.
Data was provided by the participants over 20 years old, who took part in life physical program in community center in Seoul. 655 adults were selected for this study by Stratified Cluster Random Sampling Method. Also a questionnaire for goal-oriented analysis was used as an instrument for the study (Nichollas and Duda 1989: Seung Chang Hun, 1994). To measure sports commitment, the verified tool, which was developed by Jeong Yong Gak(1997) based on the data by Scanlan(1993) was used. The colleted data was analyzed with the SPSS/PC 12.0 version on Windows.
Result is as follows:
Most of all, based on swimmer’s general characteristics, their orientations were following; first, there was no significant achievement goal orientation difference between sexes. Second, based on their age variation, younger tend to be task-oriented and ego-oriented. Third, from the long term perspective, the longer the participants participated, the higher their ego-orientation was revealed. Fourth, as the frequency of participation is high, it was shown that they are task-oriented. Fifth, the higher their participation time is, the higher their ego-orientation was revealed.
Additionally, according to swimming participants’ general characteristics, the results of sports commitments are as follows: first, there was no significant difference according to their sex variation. Second, the younger the participants’ age was, the higher their cognitive and behavioral commitments were revealed. Third, the longer the period of their participation was, the higher their behavioral commitment was shown. Fourth, as the frequency of participation was often, participants’ cognitive and behavioral commitments were high. Fifth, the more and more they participated, their cognitive and behavioral commitments were high.
Lastly, on the basis of achievement goal orientation, the analysis of sports commitment is like follows; first, it was shown that as task-orientation was high, cognitive commitment was also high. Second, as ego-orientation was high, behavioral commitment was also high.
