This study is on the media education aimed at establishing identity of the subjects of multi-culture in a multi-cultural society. Since the entering into a multi-cultural society, there have been an increase of minority multi-culture subjects including marriage immigrant women. Regrettably, because of the prejudice and preconception of the mainstream class of the society, minority multi-cultural subjects have been regarded as inferior, such as the weak or trouble-makers. Therefore, rather than confining them as the inferior subjects, we need to look into the societal context on how they push their ways through various circumstances, and establish their identities. In doing so, this study grasps the process of independency of marriage immigrant women by looking into the perception of self-identity they feel about themselves. In a multi-cultural society, it is the purpose of this study to seek the direction and possibility of media education of marriage immigrant women for their identity establishment.
To accomplish the purpose, we selected, as participants of this research, 6 marriage immigrant women with media education experience and 6 teachers on media education with experience in teaching immigrant women, and conducted in-depth interviews. Also, we set the following research questions; i)Whether the perception of self-identity of marriage immigrant women and media education can contribute in solving their problems, ii)problems in actual media education site, iii)seeking the possibility of customized media education for marriage immigrant women.
Study results are as follows. First, according to the results on marriage immigrant women's perception on self-identity, they seemed to attempt a new identity change while denying social status given to them by mainstream class after experiencing a long settlement period. That is, after recognizing that they are viewed negatively by the existing society, such as the weak, problem makers or deviates, marriage immigrant women started to realize that they need to develop and enhance themselves to stand against these prejudices.
Second, according to results of a study on the influence of media education in solving problems of marriage immigrant women, it turned out to contribute in expressing the positiveness of those women. More specifically, media education helped these women to recover self-confidence, to improve their ability of self-expression. These, in turn, induced positive changes to the lives of these women.
Third, after studying perceptions of marriage immigrant women on the problems of media education, it turned out that these women recognized such areas as class hours, class contents, lack of the sense of purpose, teachers' attitude as problems in media education. On the other hand, teachers recognized the following as problems; difficulty in student recruiting, language barrier, economic difficulty of students and poor educational environment which can not support the students.
By putting together the above-cited results, we can suggest measures for the advancement of media education of marriage immigrant women. In order for the improvement of media education for these women, a horizontal relationship between students and teachers needs to be maintained. Also, 'door-to-door media education' is encouraged for those who can not attend the education due to geographical difficulties. In addition, by segmenting its purpose, we need to introduce a differentiated service to those immigrant women who have been neglected.
