In the adolescent and physical development period, the changes in physiological development which concerning the sensitivity, the rapid excitement and the negative emotions,will appear. Therefore, in this period, by the students who participates in orchestral ensemble activities, will get the emotional stability and will learn the social skills through group activities by preparing for the concert and will also learn self-confidence and an accomplishment by the experience that playing in front of the others. Because there are also the limitations to the regular curriculum classes, the special activity class are to help interpersonal skills and to develop group activities.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual conditions and the educational effects on the orchestral ensemble activities conducted within special activity class and to analyze the problems to present the plan that can help vitalize the orchestral ensemble activities. To this end, the chronological timeline and the contents of the special activity class, the features of the special activity classes in the foreign countries, the educational significance of the orchestral ensemble activity in the adolescence, and lastly the case of ‘El sistema’ which a success of Venezuela's music education practices in theoretical view were considered in this research. And by observing the problems and to improvements of the orchestras from the four different middle schools with the 11 different teachers and the 122 different students were able to reach the following conclusions.
First, the orchestral ensemble activities for students were found out to be effective in developing hobbies and competencies, career searching capabilities, confidence, accomplishment, to learn team work, to enhance the cultural quality of life and continuous of the leisure life.
Second, the problems of the orchestral ensemble activities are the lack of rehearsal time, unevenly distributed and organized instrument, increase in teacher's workload and the lack of securing a professional instructor.
Third, to improve and solve the problems from the research, the practice hours in day-off Saturdays, taking advantage of the morning self-study time, the recognition of the importance of song selection, the changes in the perception of parents and school principal and by vitalizing mentor program were considered and also the ongoing research in special activity classes are needed.
As based on the results, the recommendations from the researcher to vitalizing the orchestral ensemble activities are follows.
First, even though the orchestral ensemble activities are done by the amateur, the practice and learning system from professional orchestra are to be applied, so the student can play with the pride.
Second, forming a club between schools with the orchestral ensemble activities to exchange and share the information and the music pieces
Third, the orchestral ensemble to be more effective, the group and private lessons should held together.
Fourth, by writing a journal, the progress of the orchestra would be kept and make any instructors easily see and keeping track of the characteristics and attributes of the orchestra.
Lastly, at the end of each semester, teachers and classes are to be assessed by the students and embrace their opinions to make the efforts to vitalize the orchestral ensemble activities.
