The study was designed to examine the effects of 9 weeks of dance sports training program on body composition, aerobic capacity, blood lipids, insulin resistance, and mitochondria DNA (mtDNA) contents in elderly women. Twenty-eight elderly women volunteered to participate in the study as subjects and were assigned to one of two groups, i.e., dance sports training group (TR: n=18) and control group (CON: n=10). The subjects in TR participated in three kinds of dance sports for 40 minute/day, three time/wk for 9 weeks, whereas the subjects in CON were asked to maintain normal lifestyle during the period of treatment. Body composition, maximal oxygen consumption, blood lipids, blood glucose, insulin, and mitochondria DNA (mtDNA) contents were measured before and after the intervention. Data were compared between pre- and post-test as well as between TR and CON utilizing two-way ANOVA with repeated measures. Main results of the present study were as follows: 1) Body weight, body fat, percent body fat, and BMI decreased significantly in TR, whereas there were no significant changes in the variables in CON. 2) VO2max decreased significantly in CON, whereas it tended to increase in TR. 3) No significant changes were found in variables regarding blood lipids in TR and CON. 4) Although no significant changes were found in variables regarding insulin resistance in TR and CON, HOMA-IR tended to decrease in TR. 5) mtDNA contents decreased significantly in TR and CON. It was concluded that the 9 weeks of dance sports training would have positive effects on body composition and aerobic capacity in elderly women. In addition, the training would have possibility to have positive effects on enhancing insulin resistance in elderly women. Research investigating effects of a longer period of dance sports training on blood lipid profiles, insulin resistance, and mtDNA contents would be warranted in the future.
