There have been few researches on personal colors for those who are 60 or more years old. In this context, the purpose of this study is to identify characteristics of skin colors and personal colors of females who are 60 or more years old, and to analyze the relation between the two factors. The results of this study are as follows.
First, based on the actual measurement of colors for the subjects, "Hue" was shown between 2.55YR and 8.03YR, and all the 103 subjects did not excess the range of YR. In particular, more than half of the subjects were ranged between 5YR and 7YR. "Skin brightness(value of color)" was ranged between 5.5 and 6.7, and "Chroma" was ranged between 3.2 and 4.2. Therefore, the mean values of the skin colors of the subjects were 5.83YR 6.05/3.8, and L*=62.21 a*=9.49 b*=19.81.
Second, based on the naked-eye color measurement of the skin colors of the subjects by using "skin color cards," many of the subjects were included in "Natural" (highest), followed by "Cool" and "Warm" (in order). As for the lightness classified by three phases of brightness, light phase, middle phase, and dark phase were shown in order. Therefore, generally subjects who were included in "Natural" with light skin color were shown with relatively high frequency.
Third, the author of this study classified skin colors into three types by using the values of the actual skin measurement and the results of naked-eye color measurement to present color range of the actual color measurements for each type.
(1) As for "Cool" skin color, based on the values of the actual color measurement, the color value was ranged between 2.55YR and 5.05YR, with the mean of 4.29YR 5.96/3.82. Out of the subjects, 26.7% were included in this type of skin color.
(2) As for "Natural" skin color, based on the values of the actual color measurement, the color value was ranged between 5.05YR and 7.03YR, with the mean of 5.96YR 6.04/3.81. Out of the subjects, 53.3% were included in this type of skin color.
(3) As for "Warm" skin color, based on the values of the actual color measurement, the color value was ranged between 7.03YR and 8.03YR, with the mean of 7.35YR 6.20/3.73. Out of the subjects, 20% were included in this type of skin color.
Fourth, according to the results of the personal colors of the subjects, the harmony/inharmony of the subjects of this study was determined rather by "tone" than by "color," and, based on the results, the author presented six types on the basis of "tone."
According to analysis, "type 1" commonly showed harmony with colors included in pale and light tones, and "type 2" showed harmony with colors included in light, bright, and a part of vivid tones. Because some subjects showed harmony values in the colors with mid-value/high-chroma of vivid tones, these subjects were classified into "type 3." The subjects who showed harmony with deep, strong, dark, and a part of vivid tones were classified into "type 4." Some subjects who showed harmony mainly in soft and light grayish tones and partially in high-value colors in pale and light tones were classified into "type 5." Finally, the subjects who showed harmony with colors in dull, grayish, and deep tones were classified into "type 6."
Type 2 was the personal color type containing the most subjects (41.7%), followed by type 1 (23.3%). The general order was type 2 > type 1 > type 4 > type 6 > type 3 > type 5.
Fifth, the results of the analysis of personal colors of the subjects with the three types of skin colors are as follows.
(1) As for "Cool" skin color, type 2 included in light, bright, and a part of vivid tones were analyzed most. The general order was type 2 > type 1 > type 3 > type 4, and type 5 and type 6 were excluded because they were shown under significance level. As for colors, the subjects showed harmony with blue, purple, and violet relatively when compared to those having the other two skin colors.
(2) As for "Warm" skin color, the subjects showed large harmony when colors with "light and smooth tone" such as pale and light tones, showing Positive Images. The general order was type 1 > type 2 > type 5 = type6 > type 4. Meanwhile, no subject with "Warm" skin color was included in type 3 showing harmony with vivid tone. As for colors, the subjects showed wide-ranged harmony with orange, yellow, red, and light green when compared to those having the other two skin colors.
(3) As for "Natural" skin color, most of the subjects were included in type 2. The general order was type 2 > type 1 > type 4, and few were included in type 3, type 5, or type 6.
Conclusively, according to the analysis of relation between skin colors and person colors of the subjects, six types were shown in three skin colors, but in "Cool" and "Warm" skin colors with distinct characteristics of skin colors, some types had few subjects or no subject. Regardless of the three skin colors, harmony was mainly shown with high-brightness colors. There were mainly differences in middle-brightness / high-chroma when "Cool" and "Warm" skin colors were compared. Meanwhile, "Natural" skin colors had the wider range of colors in harmony when compared to the other two skin colors. Further studies are needed to research on "Natural" skin colors.
