This study aims to verify the relationship between the perceived career barrier and career attitude maturity of the adult learner studied in life-long education attached to university and career decision-making self-efficacy mediate career attitude maturity. Furthermore, it will compare whether there is a variable according to gender.
For this study, survey was done by adult learners studied in the course of academic degree and national qualifications from 4 major recognized life-long educations attached to university such as H University, S University, J University and K University and it was focused on the perceived career barrier, career decision-making self-efficacy and career attitude maturity. The finding of the study was as follows:
Firstly, there was no significant difference in the perceived career barrier and the career decision-making self-efficacy in the part of measurement variable according to gender except the carrier attitude maturity. In the case of career attitude maturity, it showed significant difference on the basis of gender and women had higher state of being mature in career attitude than men. (t=-2.434, df=306, P<0.05).
Secondly, it showed that the perceived career barrier gave the negative effect to the career attitude maturity between the relationship between the perceived career barrier and the career attitude maturity. (F=41.298, df=9,298 , P<0.05).
Thirdly, it was examined that the career decision-making self-efficacy gave significant static effect on career attitude maturity of the adult learner. (F=20.530, df=5.302, P<0.05).
Fourthly, we were known that the perceived career barrier had significantly inadequate influence on the career decision-making self-efficacy.(F=21.842, df=8.299 , P<0.05).
Fifthly, the career decision-making self-efficacy had mediated the perceived career barrier and the career attitude maturity and the perceived career barrier and the career decision-making self-efficacy respectively had significant effect on the career attitude maturity. This was explained through value 0.523.
As indicated in this study, it is very important for adult learners to overcome the perceived career barrier and establish career decision-making self-efficacy for their career development. Moreover, the following limitation in this study should be settled to continue further research.
First of all, as this study was mainly surveyed by adult learners study in life-long education attached to universities located in Seoul area, it may cause trouble that it can be generalized. As well, examination on perceived career barrier and career attitude maturity selected in this study was developed targeting university students and therefore, it might be inappropriate to adult learners. Accordingly, complementation would be needed for further investigation with using the qualitative research method including interview or observation method for the in-depth understanding because this survey depends on questionnaire.
On the basis of these findings, this study purposes to provide fundamental materials to understand career development of adult learners, find effective method to handle perceived career barrier and investigate career development guideline for adult.
