This study dealt with the developmental phases of Printed Folding screen Pictures(印刷 屛風畵) which had not previously been attempted and the correlation between printed pictures and Minhwa(民畵) by focusing on the pictures of animals flowers and birds. Printing technology, introduced into Korea in its westernization, enabled the reproduction of various pictures. And to a certain degree printed folding screen pictures replaced holographic pieces of Minhwa which had been used for embellishment of houses and temples.
Among printed folding screen pictures, it was especially pictures of animals flowers and birds that were manufactured largely and spread nationwide. For, the colorful pictures had meanings of auspiciousness and exorcism and harmonized well with houses as interior decorations in the same way as they occupied the most in Minhwa.
In printed pictures of animals flowers and birds, some numbers of those formulated through a little different colors by the technical nature of reproduction have been handed down. Chief painted subjects are such as tiger, peacock and eagle, and chrysanthemum and rooster also often appear. The subjects like tiger and rooster were used in Korea’s traditional pictures but are perceived to have been influenced in design and motiff by Japanese style of painting. Considering Japanese painters’ names are impressed in most of various printed folding screen pictures as well as printed animals flowers and birds pictures, these pictures are deemed to have flowed into Korea after being manufactured in Japan since their early stage. After flowing into Korea already in the 1920s, the printed folding screen pictures were circulated nationwide, which is known by photo data. Among them, printed pictures of animals flowers and birds had been used for folding screens at celebratory events like wedding and 60th birthday until the 1980s.
As ‘a new arts’, such printed pictures of animals flowers and birds came into a new demand and replaced for a large part the location of Minhwa pieces that had previously existed as a public art. In other words, the printed folding screen pictures functioned as cheap and popular images that were the most associated with Minhwa’s properties. For all that, the presence of Minhwa artists who might have existed since late in the Joseon Dynasty did not yet disappear. Rather, the Minhwa artists actively borrowed and altered the themes and motiffs painted in printed pictures of animals flowers and birds so that their Minhwa could meet the tastes of people in those days, which is known by the still existent Minhwa pieces of animals flowers and birds.
This study aimed to examine the developmental phases of modern-circulated visual culture by looking into the relationship between Minhwa and printed folding screen pictures created through print technology. The comparison of Minhwa with printed folding screen pictures and Japanese painting style is expected to help form the basis of broader access to the understanding of modern fine arts by breaking away from the existing ultranationalist outlook on Minhwa.
