The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of 10-week forest exercise on change of blood melatonin concentration in the elderly. There were two group(n=14): forest exercise(n=7; 67.86±3.29 yrs) and indoor exercise(n=7; 67.29±3.20 yrs). They were tested on blood melatonin levels at the beginning and at the end of each exercise. While the forest exercise groups(walking + resistance exercise) worked for 60minutes with HRmax 60% level and 3 times/week, the field walking groups(only treadmill walking exercise) worked for 60minutes with HRmax 60% level and 3 times/week. For data analysis, mean and standard deviation scores were calculated,and 3way-ANOVA and t-tests were used. This study resulted in as follows.
1. There was significant increase in the melatonin concentration before/after the forest exercise for 10 weeks.
2. There was no difference in the melatonin concentration before/after the indoor exercise for 10 weeks.
3. While the forest exercise group showed the significant increase of melatonin concentration after 10-week forest exercise, but the indoor exercise group did not have any change of melatonin concentration after 10-week indoor exercise.
Therefore, the present findings suggest that the forest exercise as a walking and resistance exercise may be more effective than the indoor exercise as a treadmill walking exercise for increasing blood melatonin concentration in the elderly.
