The Purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between dispositional optimism and emotional intelligence.
The research Questions were established for this study as follows:
First, are there any relationship between dispositional optimism and emotional intelligence of elementary school students?
Second, are there gender differences in dispositional optimism of elementary school students?
Third, are there gender differences in emotional intelligence of elementary school students?
The participants in this study were 217 fifth and sixth grade students(108 boys and 109 girls). The students were sampled from two elementary schools in Chungbuk. The instruments used for study were the Children's Life Orientation Test(CLOT) by Kim Ju-yong(2008) and Emotional Intelligence by Moon Yong-rin(1997).
The data obtained were analyzed by t-test using the SPSS 15.0 program.
The results of this study were as follows;
First, there were a significant relationship between dispositional optimism and emotional intelligence of elementary school students.
Second, there were no significant gender differences in dispositional optimism of elementary school students.
Third, there were no significant gender differences in emotional intelligence of elementary school students.
Based on the result, it is concluded that dispositional optimism was closely related to emotional intelligence. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the program to enhance the dispositional optimism of elementary school students.
